The obvious is that Armwood is under the spotlight this season. Yearly, the Hawks are favorites to advance to the Florida State’s Championship game and yearly they get there or real close to it. This year is not any different. The Hawks will return a number of key players including running back Matt Jones, offensive guard Cody Waldrop and outside linebacker Eric Striker. Along with the players mentioned, the Hawks are a team made up of a number of D1 prospects that get a tremendous amount of local and statewide attention. But there is one Hawk in the nest that doesn’t get all the ink, but is one of the most productive Hawks the program has seen.
Allow us to introduce to some and present to others, Shelldon Lewinson. Lewinson is one of the many really good defensive linemen Armwood seems to grow on an annual basis. He is not one to ask for attention or recognition, but would rather let his play talk for him. At 6-2/240lbs, the 2012 defensive tackle is a Kingston, Jamaica native who has only been playing football for the last two years. Basketball was his sport of choice growing up until he was introduced to American football a few years ago.
“Ever since I was a little boy, I spent time in Jamaica and the states. Every year I would visit the states for an extended period of time and then go back to the island. During my sophomore year was the 1st time I ever stayed in the states. I still go back home to visit”. Shelldon is one of 7 children which he is the youngest. “I have 6 siblings; 5 sisters and 1 brother”. Both parents are retired and now run an animal farm used for dairy product purposes. Lewinson gives off a very respectful, responsible and accountable impression. Much of this I am sure comes from his upbringing and work ethic.
Because Lewinson has such a great drive and commitment towards everything he does, college football programs have taken notice to his play and character. After a stud season in 2010 with 54 total tackles, 4 sacks and 10 TFLs, Lewinson is the owner of a number division 1 and division 1AA verbal athletic football scholarships. A few schools on the list are Wake Forest, Western Michigan, Youngstown State, North Texas, Temple, Grambling State and Bethune Cookman. “I want to go to a school with a good medical program because I want to be a doctor”, says Lewinson. With the season upon us, Shelldon says he wants to go out with a bang ending his senior year with double digits sacks, 90 plus total tackles and double digit tackles for loss. Currently Lewinson bench presses 390lbs, Squats 630lbs and runs the 40 yard dash in 4.6 seconds. “I want to win a state championship and want to be remembered as the fastest defensive lineman to play at Armwood, a hard worker and a teammate who never gave up.”~Shelldon Lewinson
