Friday Night’s 2A-5 BIG BALLERS

Todd Macon, Admiral Farragut, RB, 2013
Todd Macon, Admiral Farragut, RB, 2013

Any time you want to start a heated debate in high school football in this state, try to compare what a talented, dominating player from a small-school would do against the bigger schools. Many folks simply cannot wrap their arms around the concept that just because a kid goes to a school with less students in the entire enrollment than half the freshman class at another that means he’s not capable of playing with the “big boys”. People think the competition is inferior or that it’s easy to dominate when you touch the ball over 75% of the total plays. If you are a part of this contingency, then I’ve got some oceanfront property in South Dakota to show you. There are players at Berkeley Prep, Admiral Farragut, Carrollwood Day, Indian Rocks Christian RIGHT NOW that are planning their moves to the next level. And not just any level, but BCS. It’s time to prove that if you take out the ‘C’ in BCS you’ve got your answer to your theory.

Quick Hit: This was a great showcase of two great running backs from small schools. Robert Davis finished with 326 yards and 4 touchdowns as well as a 99 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Toddrick Macon finished with 226 yards and 4 touchdowns and was backed up by Napoleon Maxwell with 141 yards and 2 TDs. At one point this game was thought to be over as CDS lead 28-7 very early on and 41-27 late in the 3rd. Admiral Farragut showed their resilience though as their defense stiffened and contained Robert Davis for the rest of the game while scoring 22 unanswered points.

With Canterbury and Indian Rocks Christian both losing tonight the 2A-5 district has just become murkier. Everyone has a loss but as of right now Canterbury holds the lead with Admiral Farragut trailing. This district could be the most interesting to follow going forward.

Robert Davis, Carrollwood Day, 2013, RB
If Davis is on the field, CDS fans should alway feel like there is a chance. After watching Davis live in action for the past two weeks, I am convinced that he is a gamer. Fighting through an aggravating shoulder injury, the Carrollwood Day back is alway one play away from breaking for 60,75 or 90. Versus Admirral Faragut, the workhorse did it all. Took a kick off return to the house for 99, cut up 3 defenders on his way to the promise land for 70 and just as Farragut was getting back into the game, Davis killed their spirits with another big run. Unofficial, he finished the contest with over 300 yards rushing on 20 carriers. He is not going going to bully a defender, but will surely run around and shake a defender out his shoes on his way past him. He is tougher that expected, can take a good hit and has a fierce competitive attitude.

Todd Macon, Admiral Farragut, 2013, RB
Farragut is down 22-0 (would have never expected that) late in the 1st quarter. Reyshawn Jenkins and Cortavious Givens, both out due to injury. Impressive was how Farragut head football coach, Chris Miller, never swayed from his plan…feed Todd Macon the ball. Oh and he ate good. CDS had absolutely no answer for Macon. At no time was he trying to run around any defender, but run slap over or directly through them. Macon was powerful, intimidating and punishing. As the game wore long, score became tight and the clock became a factor, Macon got stronger and stronger, carrying defenders with him as he either picked up crucial 1st downs or morale killing touchdowns. Unofficially, he finished the game with an eye popping 250 yards on 26 carries.  SEE VIDEO HERE

Robbie Robertson, Cambridge, 2013, ATH
Who? Exactly the response the majority of BCP viewers will give. Don’t get it twisted, the junior Lancer can play. In a game that appeared to mean slightly more to Cambridge than Indian Rocks (Bob Dare had not beaten IRC since taking over the Lancer program), Robertson shined bright. Besides scoring twice in the second half, his most impressive play came on a short underneath screen designed to get the line backers into their pass drops and hit Robertson crossing their face and race directly upfield. Worked great, but the Golden Eagle sniffed it out late and should have made a play on it only allowing a minimal game. Robertson catches the ball races towards his own sideline, takes on a tackler, hurdles him, keeps his balance, “Shake and Bakes” the next defender on his way to a big first down. The kid is legit. He is great for that program and magnificent for our 2A-5 district.  SEE VIDEO HERE
