Field Goal(s) – Three Points from Skyway’s Weekly 7-on-7

TAMPA – The Wednesday 7-on-7 crew out at Skyway once again got busy in the late-July summer heat with Wharton, Gaither, Steinbrenner, Tampa Catholic, Plant and Leto all getting their reps. Plenty of good QB play to talk about so let’s get you updated without further delay.

–Tampa Catholic vs. Gaither
The Crusaders are working on getting new transfer Austin Sessums broken-in with their offense and through all of the bumps in the first couple weeks, the light seems to burn a little brighter each time he gets out on the field. The Cowboys lead wire-to-wire courtesy of some extremely stingy defense towards the end and timely execution on offense which is something that will be expected come the regular season. All in its perspective though; as long as they keep the score, you have to go and win the damn thing, but it appears that Sessums is starting to find some rhythm with guys like Noah Carlson and Nate Craig-Myers. His best pass was to the streaking Carlson down the field on a one-pass drive that was a complete drop-it-in-the-bucket moment, along with showcasing some pretty serious arm strength completing passes in traffic.

–Robinson vs. Steinbrenner
The QB’s went at it pretty good in this one with Malik Tyson (Robinson) and Cason Byrd (Steinbrenner) making some big-boy throws into traffic and into space with the required touch. This game also featured some big time plays all around from the receivers (especially the ones wearing black and silver) to the defensive backs from both squads. Robinson won the game 20-19, but it was Tyson’s efficiency on Wednesday that all of those hoping for a big season need him to bottle up and save for when the pads come on. He was picked off once, but also had three touchdowns in four snaps plus put his throws into traffic with ease. Needless to say his noticeable offseason progression continues to trend.

–Let’s talk about that pink elephant
Well, the post-Rex Culpepper era on the field began (unofficially-but-officially) this week and it appears that even though they’ve one of the unequivocal leaders of the team ON the field, the Panthers will be resilient and find the next man (or young men) to fill the void between the hash marks. Dane Frantzen got some good work for Plant and even though there’s no replacing what Culpepper brings in terms of the total picture for Plant this season, things should still go as close to plan as possible when you look at all the pieces still in place. At least there’s “some” time for adjustment, still.
