Durant travels to Newsome for the East County Showdown

Anthony Gamble, Newsome

Last night, Durant made their way to The Den at Newsome for some hoop action versus area rival. The game started very slow as both teams missed buckets from every area of the floor. Both teams felt each other out through the first quarter before the second quarter scoring explosion.

The Newsome fans were asked not to cheer until Newsome hit ten points. When that happened, the gym erupted and so did the scoring. Both teams traded buckets back and forth with an array of three pointers and several second chance points.

The Wolves stepped on the court with a significant height advantage, but Durant battled on the glass the entire first half and scrapped for loose balls. The Cougars also created several turnovers and/or bad passes by the Wolves. At the half, Newsome led 28-26.

Newsome would pull away in the third quarter outscoring Durant 15-7 in that period. Fast forward to the fourth quarter. Durant starts to make a run and pulls within 9 points with less than two minutes remaining in the game. Very winnable situation. A few stops on defense and knock down a few shots and Durant has a chance to pull this out.

Durant applies a very unaggressive press, which led to no turnovers. The Lady Cougars are screaming from the stands, “foul!” in hopes to put Newsome at the line and hopefully miss a few free throws. No Durant player fouls for the entire final 2 minutes of the game and Newsome would go home with the win. Final: Newsome 54 Durant 42
