Drama at Jesuit. Lakewood stands tall

Lakewood players celebrate after big win

Lakewood Spartans earned a big win vs. district opponent Jesuit. But, not without a little drama.

The DRAMA
Jesuit erupted late in the 4th quarter of Friday’s night’s game against Lakewood and appeared to be on the verge of an incredible comeback. The Tiger’s offense had been lifeless for much of the game and a Marquez Valdes touchdown early in the fourth seemed to be the nail in the Tigers coffin.

Senior Travis Johnson refused to allow the Tigers to go down quietly. Lakewood had held the University of Miami commit in check all night; yet, with his team struggling the 6’4 wide receiver stepped up in a huge way. Johnson made an acrobatic 44 yard reception that breathed life into the Jesuit faithful. Jesuit’s “Blue Tide” flocked to the sidelines to watch Johnson power threw a defensive back and nab a 14 yard touchdown pass from Vincent Testaverde a few plays later.

Trailing by only three points the Jesuit defense, led by Brad Smith’s 4 sacks, forced a Lakewood punt on the next position. The Jesuit offense went back to work and drove the ball to their own ten yard line with seconds to go. Jesuit kicker Rhett Waldron, who nailed a 41-yard field goal earlier in the game, attempted what seemed would be a chip shot. Lakewood defenders barreled into Jesuit’s offensive line and were able to block the kick and end the Tiger’s playoff hopes.

Travis Johnson immediately fell to the field and had to be consoled by teammates. He had done everything in his power to bring the Tigers back from the brink; yet, sometimes your best effort just isn’t good enough.
