Dragons defeat Warriors

LUTZ – Jefferson (6-4) jumped out to a 20-6 halftime lead on the arm of sophomore quarterback Cade Weldon and Steinbrenner (3-6) was not able to close the gap on this Warriors’ senior night, final score 33-19.

Weldon hit on 18-of-24 passes for 242 yards and three touchdowns including first quarter touchdown passes to senior wide receivers Maurice Moore for 15 yards and Taj Jenkins for 52 yards and again to Jenkins in the third quarter on a 50-yarder. Taj on the night caught four passes for 120 yards and Maurice caught 5 passes for 73 yards.

Jefferson senior running backs, Salron Montgomery and Corey Walker, each scored on short touchdown runs in second and fourth quarters, respectively, and Salron was the Dragons leading rusher with 63 yards on 11 carries.

On defense, Dragons senior cornerback Quinton Rogers had an interception and tackle-for-loss and junior defensive end Jackie Moore knocked down two pass attempts.

Steinbrenner used a short passing attack and senior quarterback Quentin Poteralski went 19-for-31 for 143 yards including a 21-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Cody Burgess in the fourth quarter. Burgess was the Warriors leading receiver with eight catches for 78 yards.

The Warriors leading ball carrier was junior running back Jayquese Dantley who rushed 15 times for 90 yards including a 13-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Poteralski added 10 carries for 41 yards with a 3-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.

The Steinbrenner defense sacked Weldon four times including two each by senior defensive lineman Andres Bautista and junior defensive end Pat Lukert. Junior defensive lineman Andre Washington added two tackle-for-losses.
