It’s the second installment of BCP’s Distinguished Alumni this week as we do our best to highlight the ballers that have camped with us and our now doing big things at the collegiate level. Last week, we had a pair of players bring home the honors–current Jacksonville State WR and Robinson Alumnus Reuben Gonzalez and Georgia Southern RB from Nature Coast Matt Breida were the very first recipients of this distinction.
Gonzalez caught eight passes for 109 yards this past week for the JSU against Tennessee State this past week for his number one ranked Gamecocks in the FCS division. The USF transfer has caught 21 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown for the season while Breida had another fantastic week as he rambled for 164 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns versus The Citadel. Breida’s now rushed for 405 yards on 41 carries and has six touchdowns on the season. This week could we have the same scenario? We will just have to find out. Here are this week’s nominees (and winners) for BCP’s Distinguished Alumni for week three of the college season.
AND THE NOMINEES AREā¦
Vernon Hargreaves III, (University of Florida/Wharton HS)
4 tackles, an interception returned for 53 yards and a pass deflection on the road in a hostile environment in Lexington versus the ‘Cats earn a nomination for the former Wildcat from Wharton. VH3 was banged up in the East Carolina game week two leaving some nervous moments in the secondary for staff and fans alike, but was present and accounted for in UF’s conference opener.
Tyler Higbee, (Western Kentucky University/East Lake HS)
This Eagles’ grad was soaring for the Hilltoppers last Saturday and almost made the Hoosiers call him daddy as he caught 11 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown vs. Indiana in a 38-35 loss. Higbee’s posted some pretty nice stats thus far through the first three weeks for WKU as well, putting up 22 receptions for 209 yards and 2 TD’s.
Xavier Johnson, (University of South Alabama/Chamberlain HS)
Johnson rushed for 142 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns on the road at San Diego State for the Jags as they pulled off the huge upset in OT 34-27. Johnson’s rushed for 300 yards on 33 carries and has three touchdowns for the season.
Chase Litton, (Marshall University/Wharton HS)
Litton nearly broke Chad Pennington’s record for most TD’s in a game for the Thundering Herd in his very first game, but it was his world and the rest of us paying rent in it anyways going 24-of-31 for 270 yards, four touchdowns and NO interceptions in their stampede over Norfolk State 45-7.
Ish Witter, (University of Missouri/Alonso HS)
The Tigers had to struggle to come out with the victory over the Huskies, but Mizzou got the job done and it was this Ravens’ Alumnus that led Mizzou in rushing on the day as they defeated UCONN 9-6. Witter was credited with 54 yards on 17 carries and caught three passes for 31 yards in the victory.
AND THE WINNER(s) ARE???
We have a tie again–(we swear this isn’t by design)
Chase Litton – Anytime you make your first start and nearly set a school-record that’s a good day–even better when you come home with that ‘W’ as well. Congrats to Chase on his ballerific effort for the ‘Herd. Good luk to him and the rest of his team as they travel to Kent State this weekend.
Xavier Johnson – This Chief knows how to lead a tribe as he helped the Jaguars get a signature win on the road for a program that went to a bowl game last season. Congrats to Xavier on his man-sized effort in SoCal last weekend. The Jaguars and Johnson host North Carolina State this weekend in Mobile.
