Costly Turnovers Kill Kathleen

In a tale of halves, Kathleen and Lake Gibson duked it out for 48 minutes fighting till the very end. The Red Devils from Kathleen played as good as any team could play defensively the first half, limiting rush yards, eliminating the pass and creating turnovers; one leading to a safety and the only score of the first half. Not to be out done, the Braves were very sound defensively. They bent some but did not break and kept the Kathleen offense out of the endzone the entire game.

Kathleen QB, Dexter Brown played pretty well the first half. Threw a few nice balls on the run and made a few plays with his feet. Francisco Nelson played as good as any player on the field in the first half. Was very disciplined off the edge and harassed the Lake Gibson ball carriers for 24 minutes.

At the half, Lake Gibson made just about every mistake possible and still only trailed Kathleen 2-0. After the teams took the field for the second half, it was if the turnover bug switched teams and bit Kathleen hard.

Down 2-0, The Braves engineered a 52 yard scoring drive capped off by a 1 yard TD run by senior Dj Brown. The score put Lake Gibson up 7-2 with less than 3:00 mins remaining in the third quarter. Kathleen squandered away two scoring drives with costly fumbles that were recovered by Lake Gibson.

With 9:06 left in the game, K Gildardo Mata hit a 33 yard field goal making the score 7-5 Lake Gibson. Kathleen’s defense would force Lake Gibson to punt and The Red Devils would make the Braves pay. Chomping up yards, Kathleen would knock at the redzone before fumbling the ball and turning it over to Lake Gibson. But again, the scrappy Red Devil defense gave the offense a chance, forcing Lake Gibson to punt with less than 4 minutes left to play in the game. However, the Red Devil offense would put the ball on the ground once more and Lake Gibson would preserve the win.

Lake Gibson defensive line was great especially DT Keyshon Camp and DE Reuben Jones. The pair made several tackles for loss, caused and recovered fumbles and excited the crowd with some big hits. Camp was nearly unblockable. It seemed like on every play, he was in the backfield of the Red Devils. Jones was Mr. Hustle! The best play he made tonight was not on a sack or TFL. It was a hustle play running the ball carrier down from the backside, never slowing down in his pursuit.
