Coaches get judged by their cover

COACHING NOTABLES

Lets have a little fun.  The hypothetically…If you didn’t know the coaches listed below and met a few for the first time along with a brief conversation, stern hand shake and a quick “once over” of their attire, what would you think?  That’s the game.  Would the ranking below match yours?

Cory Moore, Lakewood

MOST SWAG

– What is “Swag?” Most would define the social slang word as a delicate blend of confidence and cockiness.  “Swag”, to those who use the word is usually observed before confirmed by his/her attitude.  The walk, the look, the stance, the confidence in the voice…It can be argued that Swag is developed. Comes with continued success. But could people be born with it and success breeds it?  Who knows?  But judging a book by its cover, here are the area coaches who give off a supreme sense of “Swag!”

  1. Irving Strickland, Kathleen
  2. Cory Moore, Lakewood
  3. Bill Castle, Lakeland
  4. John Booth, Bloomingdale
  5. Jason Stokes, Gaither
  6. Bob Hudson, East Lake

LIKELY TO SANP

(Yell) AT ANY MOMENT – Great coaches know how to reach/motivate their best players.  Some coaches have a look, others have a gesture; some can whisper certain words or quotes and others can raise their voice to get players to react!

The coaches below have a demeanor about them, a look where they could snap any minute for various reasons.  REMEMBER, they may not be “Snappers” they just look they would.  So, judging a book by its cover, the coaches listed below, look like they could blow up at a bad call by a ref, busted play by a player, sloppy practice, etc.  Firecracker?  Maybe I am waaaaay off.

  1. Robert Weiner, Plant
  2. Brian Turner, Sickles
  3. John Davis, Clearwater Central Catholic
  4. Dominick Ciao, Berkeley Prep
  5. Jason Butler, Bartow
  6. Chris Taylor, Fivay

Sean Callahan, Armwood

COOL CATS

– Very little could make these coaches snap.  They are calm under pressure and react the same way the majority of the time. Never too high, never too low.  Very conscious of their public perception, but behind close doors, they don’t give too cents about the trivial stuff.

They are focused on winning games and what it takes to get there.  At crunch time, they are the same as at kickoff.  Remember, this is the impression they give off. Not an actual personal profile.  Continuing to judge a book by its cover, the coaches below SEEM like “cool cats.”

  1. Sean Callahan, Armwood
  2. Earl Garcia, Hillsborough
  3. David Mitchell, Wharton
  4. Ken Grantham, Auburndale
  5. Darryl Gordon, Blake
  6. Joe Fabrizio, St. Petersburg

MOST LIKELY TO LOSE VOICE AFTER A GAME

– Many players feed off energy.  The days when practices are slow and kids’ minds wonder.  The games players look past because the rivalry game is the following week, they need that energy.

Many times, the energy come from the top down.  The head coach brings it and his troops follow.  The following coaches come across as guys who would probably go into a deep depression if they could not coach and be on the sideline Friday Night.  They live football and could go without a lot of things, but football would not be one of them.  Consequently, their passion for the game resonates via their voice and at no time will they not be heard.  Remember, we ARE judging a book by its cover.  Just the book’s looks, I think these guys go home without a voice each Friday Night.
