PINELLAS COUNTY THE BOX

Clark’s Pinellas Weekly Reactions: top dogs are clearly defined

Jeremy Powell, Pinellas Park, RB, 2012

1. At this point in the season the top dogs are clearly defined. You have Countryside, Largo, and Lakewood and you can sprinkle a little bit of CCC in there for good measures as they can probably compete with all the public schools in Pinellas this year. All have big games this week and they go as such:
a. Countryside vs PPark- If you ask me Countryside should run away with this game if they want any shot of making it past round 2 in the playoffs. Yes PPark is improving and they have all world Jeremy Powell along with Iman Smith but I can’t shake the fact they got whooped by Largo 20-0 the same Largo team that lost to Countryside by 10.
b. Lakewood vs Robinson- Lakewood travels to Port Tampa for I believe the 1st time in history and this game will decide who gets to take the trip east to Orlando to face likely opponent Bishop Moore in Round 1. This has the makings of a classic game.
c. Largo vs Lakewood Ranch- At the beginning of the season I pretty much just handed the keys to the district to Largo but now I see Lakewood Ranch is definitely a force to be reckoned with. I still say Largo pulls this out but it might be their toughest game since Countryside.

2. Where did they get these Pinellas officials from? Can you say Incompetent? From the Gibbs game where they just FORGOT to show up, the Lakewood game where they seemed to want to make a name for themselves by calling every erogenous penalty whether correct or incorrect they could think of the officiating as a whole this year has been bad across the board. Remember the phantom pass interference call against CCC in game 1? There are not enough people who want to be an official anymore and that is why we are stuck with this old guard of crews who can’t trail a play let alone make a correct call. It’s time for a changing of the guard but we have ran out of enlisted men.

3. CCC is a good team just let me get that out there. The problem going forward is, has Berkeley Prep laid out the blue print to stop their offense? It appears John Davis is going to need to let his passing game fly in order to have success in the playoffs where they could meet up with Berkeley Prep again but, 1st they will likely have to get by an old foe in Ft. Meade.

4. Clarity in 2A-5?? FINALLY. So the cards are pretty much set that Admiral Farragut and Canterbury will be district champion and runner up, but we should still have some pretty exciting games left in the district with Indian Rocks Christian playing host to CDS. Playoff road is still unclear for both as AFA will face a tough Evangelical Christian team in round one and either would have to travel down to the Muck to face Glades day to get a shot at a state title.

5. Vote for Player of the year thus far. In no particular order these are the players on my list
a. Rodney Adams 742 yds 10 tds
b. Traci Johnson 1765 yds 21TDS (currently leads the entire bay area in passing yardage)
c. Brent Oneal 1322 rushing yards 15tds
d. Jeremy Powell- Has been a wrecking crew for PPark this year if they are winning it means he is having great games on offense and defense.
