The Calvary Christian football team concluded a remarkable season, with several standout performances that earned recognition on both state and district leaderboards. Senior cornerback and wide receiver Nelson Sparrow made his mark in Florida Division 2A, ranking ninth in punt return average with an impressive 19.11 yards per return. His performance also secured the second spot in 2A District 8, where he was one of the most dynamic players on special teams and defense. Sparrow’s ability to create game-changing plays in the return game contributed to the team’s success and capped off his high school career with a strong showing.

Junior quarterback Oni Abasial emerged as a leader on offense, topping the district in passing yards with 1,449 and total yards with 1,765. His dual-threat ability as both a passer and a runner was a key factor in Calvary Christian’s offensive strategy. Abasial’s consistent playmaking kept the team competitive in every game and highlighted his potential as a rising star in Florida football. His contributions not only showcased his individual talent but also elevated the performance of his teammates.
Among those who benefited from Abasial’s leadership was senior wide receiver Austin Ho. Ho ranked second in the district in receiving yards with 552 and scored eight touchdowns, earning him third place in total points scored with 48. His reliability in the passing game and versatility as a kick returner made him a valuable asset to the team. Ho’s ability to make critical plays in key moments ensured that Calvary Christian remained a threat on offense throughout the season.

Defensively, junior linebacker Chason Taliaferro and senior linebacker Trinzel Lewis anchored the team with 55 and 51 total tackles, respectively, earning them second and third places in the district. Additionally, junior defensive end Barrett Mauldin led the district with six sacks, demonstrating dominance on the line of scrimmage. The defensive unit consistently applied pressure and made crucial stops, reflecting a disciplined and aggressive approach that defined the team’s identity on that side of the ball.
Special teams also played a significant role in Calvary Christian’s success, with junior kicker Devin Wichmann standing out. Wichmann ranked second in the district for both PAT kicks made (21) and total kicking points (24), while also amassing 1,004 kickoff yards. Junior punter and safety Jack Skubin contributed with a 36.59-yard punt average, securing the second spot in the district. Together, the special teams unit provided reliable field position and scoring opportunities, complementing the efforts of the offense and defense.
The season may have ended, but the performances of these athletes leave a legacy of excellence and set a foundation for future success at Calvary Christian.
