Berkeley Prep defeats Indian Rocks Christian

In the first local Spring football game, Berkeley Prep defeated Indian Rocks Christian 28 to 7 on Thursday night.

The Buccaneers led throughout behind the strong passing of quarterback Brad Mayes who went 16-of-27 for 228 yards and three touchdowns. Wide Receiver Cade Weldon caught 5 balls for 119 yards including second quarter 28-yard touchdown and forth quarter 49-yard touchdown catches. Wide Receiver Jacob Mathis added
a third quarter 14-yard touchdown catch and had an apparent second quarter touchdown on a 20-yard athletic catch and run but it was called back on a blocking below-the-waist penalty.

Bucs running back Gordon Stetson had 8 rushes for 99 yards including third quarter 45-yard run and 2-yard touchdown run after the Golden Eagles had pulled within 7 points, 14-7.

Berkeley Prep’s four touchdown drives were 89 yards, 57 yards, 75 yards, and 68 yards and finished the night with 376 total yards.

Joe Schiano was a standout for the Bucs defense including fumble recovery, knocked down pass, and a couple tackle-for-losses.

Indian Rocks Christian scored in third quarter on Garrett Ross-Johnson’s 5-yard pass to Sam Veltman on a 75 yard drive which came mainly on the ground from the running of Theo Anderson, who on the night had 14 rushes for 110 yards.

The Golden Eagles struggled through the air, completing only 7 passes on 21 attempts for 66 yards, 2 interceptions, and the lone touchdown.

IRC ended the night with 208 total yards on offense.

Theo Anderson was also a standout on defense with a sack, couple of tackle-for-losses, and he knocked down a pass.
