BAY AREA BITES

Bay Area Basketball Teams Positioned To Advance To Lakeland

The FHSAA boys basketball semifinals and finals will be held at The Lakeland Center March 2-5.

Area teams that are poised to head to their respective classifications Final Four with a win tonight:

2A – Tampa Prep has been as good as advertised this year, sporting a 24-3 record and host St. Petersburg’s Admiral Farragut Academy which enters with a 13-5 record.

3A – Tampa Catholic will try to continue their road warrior ways.  The Crusaders are 20-8 and have won both regional playoff games on the road.  They travel to Ft. Myers Bishop Verot Catholic.

4A – Nature Coast will host Leesburg.  Nature Coast boasts a 29-3 record including wins over Tampa heavies Plant and Sickles.  The winner of that contest will face either host Ft. Myers or their opponent Blake in Lakeland next week.  Blake has a 27-2 mark but will be venturing away from the Jackets Nest for the first time since February 2, also the date of their last loss, at Riverview.

5A – Durant (21-4) hosts Lake Wales in a regional final.  The winner faces either surprise team Chamberlain (24-2) or host Gibbs (22-7).  The 5A Final Four is guaranteed a Bay area team.  Chamberlain boasts the best all-around player in the county: Eric Storts.

6A – Wharton has a 23-5 record and will finish up hosting every game in the regional playoffs when they face Dr. Phillips (23-5).  The Wildcats will continue to be an emotional story as they play for coach Tommy Tonelli in the aftermath of his father’s passing on February 9.

All games will be played Saturday night at 7 p.m.
