Kevin McCoy, Armwood, OL

Kevin McCoy is a dominant offensive tackle. He wasn’t always a dominant force though. He always had the size, and potential but it took coach Callahan naming him a starter in his junior year to really light a fire underneath him.

“I took it as an honor and used it as motivation,” McCoy said. “I was real weak in the weight room and I was real slow running. I’m completely 100 percent different from the way I was two or three years ago.”

The chance has obviously been good for McCoy. He anchored an Armwood line and helped propel a rushing attack that averaged more than 220 yards per game.

“When you’re around players like Matt Jones it really helps the O-Line,” he explained. “Schools sometimes watch those guys and think ‘well who’s blocking for Matt Jones or who’s blocking for Alvin Bailey’ so it is good for us.”

Not only do the Hawks have a dominant rushing attack, but what they’re most known for the their overbearing defense. Facing arguably the best defense in the state every day is something that helped McCoy.

“Our defensive line is the best line we go against all year,” he explained.  “The same stuff we see everyday in practice is the same stuff we’re going to get on Friday night.”

In addition to remaining in the weight room during the offseason McCoy will participate in the shot-put and discus competitions for Armwood’s track and field team. McCoy explained that he, along with a number of senior offensive linemen, is participating in different competitions to stay active.

McCoy’s decision will come after he concludes all of his visits some time next semester.
