Armwood Hawks Cruise to 54-6 Win Over Brandon Eagles

The Hawks were without their starting quarterback and starting runningback, but it didn’t slow down their offensive attack. Armwood notched nearly 400 yards of total offense, 122 coming through the air in the first half. Alvin Bailey is a joy to watch as an athlete. When he has the ball you think to yourself there is no way this kid is a quarterback. But then he drops back and connects with Javonte Sneed for two touchdowns of 40 and 57 yards. Bailey added 74 rushing yards for the Hawks with most of those coming on runs right up the middle.

Two guys on the BCP watch list for the Brandon Eagles, Vincent Motley ’12 and Isaiah Harris ’13, did a nice job pressuring Bailey on the corners, but there was not enough presence in the middle to contain the Hawks’ attack. A third on the watch list is wide receiver Jalen Stringfellow who really didn’t have much of an opportunity to shine. The Eagles only attempted two passes, one in Stringfellow’s direction, which were both batted down by the Hawks’ defense.

Brandon’s big impact player was runningback Tyrell Garner. He accounted for nearly all of the Eagles’ all-purpose yards and scored the lone touchdown on a 96-yard kick return. He ran for 40 yards behind a Brandon o-line that was dominated by Armwood.

It’s obviously no surprise that Armwood handled Brandon pretty easily, but I want to get into some of the impact players from Armwood you maybe have not heard about much.

QB: Alvin Bailey. I know, I know.. He is listed as a WR, but this kid has an arm. Not only did he flash his arm and legs, but he is also a dynamic return man. He received kicks and punts, even extremely late in the game, which was a little frightening.

RB: Wade Edwards. With Matt Jones sidelined Edwards was able to show some of his talent rushing for 58 yards on 11 carries. Edwards was the tough runner early in the game opening up the play action pass for the Armwood offense. He didn’t flash breakaway speed. He didn’t flash unbelievable power. He was an overall grinding back who tallied two touchdowns.

RB: Gregory Newton. A young back. He only saw one carry in the first half which went for two yards. In the second half, however, he saw six carries and became the leading rusher recording 123 yards and two touchdowns. He is undersized. What Newton has though is unbelievable speed/quickness. Jones and Edwards are seniors. If Newton isn’t on your watch list, he may be worth considering.

WR: Javonte Sneed. Good size at 6’ 1”. Great hands. Above average speed. Great balance. Great use of body control. He went up high for two passes. On his longest score (57 yards) Sneed used his body to fend off the safety and came down on one foot with the defender draped all over him. He was somehow able to maintain his balance and score.
