Anchor Down: Admiral Farragut’s on course

The Admiral Farragut Blue Jackets following a season-opening loss to Carrollwood Day School are blitzing through their opposition. Head Coach Ryan Hearn has his squad sitting at 6-1 overall and 1-0 in their three team district with Indian Rocks Christian and Northside Christian. Farragut’s got a super-talented team and thanks to that talent, along with a little perspective from the staff, the Blue Jackets are a forced to be reckoned with within Class 2A on top of their district.

The Blue Jackets have averaged 52 point per game following their opening loss, scoring 60+ points three times in the six games following. They’ve used a two QB system with Austyn Causey and Keondrae Miller who’ve combined for 62-of-95 passing for 1,460 yards, 17 touchdowns and just three interceptions. They’ve also received a major contribution from junior wideout Matt Landers, who has 22 receptions for 748 yards (106ypg) and 11 touchdowns.

Head Coach Ryan Hearn was kind enough to take some time out of his busy prep for Everglades Prep to answer a few questions regarding the status of his team, and here’s what he had to say.

BCP: What’s been the message since the week one loss to Carrollwood Day School?

Ryan Hearn:  We just stress working to get better each day. We want to stay focused on the ultimate goal and thats to improve the team. We have done a great job coming together as a team. I’m very proud of this teams maturity and focus.

BCP: Tell us more about Matt Landers and the progression he’s made this season…

Ryan Hearn: Matthew is a great young man with a huge appetite to be great. He sits in my office and watches film for hours, he does a great job critiquing himself on film to see his flaws and how to make those weaknesses his strengths. He has made great strides but he is still working each and everyday like the rest of them to get even better.

BCP: Do you worry about complacency with the non-district schedule at all?

Ryan Hearn: Yes that crosses my mind, but because of our numbers we have to protect our kids for the season we do try and schedule some really good teams so my guys see good talent through out the year. In the future, we will pick a team to either travel to or vice-versa that will give us another talented team on the schedule. But at the end of the day, I believe I’m doing what’s right as the Head Coach For the team.
