AROUND THE STATE THE BOX

American Heritage 30 Madison County 3: Stallions Buck Cowboys in 3A Final

Just barely 120 minutes after kickoff, the dream of a championship for Madison County was already over. In the process of deciding a 3A state champion, the State of Florida may have gotten a glimpse at the next greatest running back to hit the national stage as well. The American Heritage Stallions on the legs of Greg Bryant stampeded the Madison County Cowboys 30-3 while only attempting 5 passes. In all reality it was about five passes too many.

American Heritage (12-1) owned every major statistical advantage from 1st Downs (14-7), to time of possession (30:26-17:34), in addition to the obvious total yardage accumulation (320-171) and scoreboard domination.  Bryant finished the game with 247 yards on 39 carries with 3 Touchdowns. His biggest strength was the sheer strength with which he finished the game stirring up comparisons to current FSU RB Devonte Freeman. Bryant was shedding two and three MadCo tacklers all afternoon causing the staffs at Florida, Georgia and Alabama to salivate over the prospects over having the young man bless their presence in 2 years.

Madison County only had the ball eight times with 6 of those drives ending in a turnover on downs, punts or a fumble. The Cowboys were 0-for-9 on 3rd Down Conversions in addition to only converting 1-of-4 on 4th Down. Conversely American Heritage was 8-of-16 on 3rd Down and 3 of 3 on 4th Down conversions. The Stallions also had a total of eight possessions, but cashed in 4TD’s and a FG putting the cumbersome Madison County Offense into a position of having to throw which is something they don’t do well to start.

Tevin Roundtree led the Cowboys with 11 tackles in addition to Deshawntee Gallon’s 9 . For American Heritage it was Giancarlo Bennardo, Zach Slafsky, and Sillmore Dallaway adding 6 tackles each. Dallaway also added a 44 yard scoop and score as time expired to make the score 30-3. Madison County finished the season at 12-2. Their run to the playoffs finished with victories over Jacksonville Episcopal, Defending 2A State Champions Jacksonville Trinity Christian, Defending 2B State Champions Trinity Catholic.  American Heritage defeated Chaminade-Madonna, University, Berkeley Prep, and now Madison County. Quite an impressive stretch for a team that returns its nucleus next season as well.
