Armwood junior athlete Alvin Bailey had a very impressive Under Armour Combine on Saturday. Bailey competed alongside Wharton DB Vernon Hargreaves and Middleton WR/DB Richard Benjamin in the “stars” group as the combine listed the top 25 players on the Under Armour official roster.
Combine Numbers:
40: 4.7
Broad Jump: 9.3 feet
Bench Reps: 10 at 185
Shuttle: 4.11
During individual drills Bailey only spent time as a wide receiver. Although he can play anywhere its clear that he will be most successful as an outside receiver at the next level. Where Bailey showed his lack of reps as a WR his raw talent shined through. Having played mostly quarterback in 2011 his route running was, as expected, not as crisp as some of the more seasoned receivers.
Bailey’s hands, body control and ability to adjust to a ball-in-flight was however impressive. Adjusting to passes that were off the mark was even more visible during 1-on-1 drills at the combine. That’s were Bailey impressed most.
Throughout 1-on-1’s Bailey’s most underdeveloped skill appeared to be his route running, but again, having not played the position much it was to be expected. His release was consistently clean. He was able to use his hands very well to avoid being jammed.
There was one route that Bailey seems to have mastered during his high school career. The go route. Numerous times Bailey was able to get behind some of the top corners in the country and pull down 40-yard-touchdown receptions. He was able to go up and catch the ball at its highest point, as well stop on a dime to comeback to under thrown passes. There was little Bailey couldn’t do with the ball in the air.
As 1-on-1’s came to an end Under Armour coaches began pairing up some of the top WRs and DBs to go against each other. They called over one of the top defensive backs and put him in front of Bailey. Wharton’s Vernon Hargreaves had not been beat all day until Bailey got behind him and reeled in a touchdown. The two joked about the play after the combine. VIDEO HERE
Things got interesting for the Tampa Bay connection during 7-on-7’s. While Bailey was mostly kept quiet offensively he spent some time on the defensive side of the ball along side Hargreaves and Middleton’s Richard Benjamin. A pass was not completed while the trio was in the defensive backfield.
If Armwood is able to get, and keep, Darryl Richardson healthy that would give the opportunity for Bailey to play WR full-time next year to hone his skills, boast his stats and impress even more college coaches.
Heavy interest already surrounds the junior, many more big time BCS offers should be headed his way. Don’t forget, he is also a state champion.
FINAL 2011 STATS:
Rushing: 109 carries – 872 yards – 6 TD
Passing: 49-for-89 – 975 yards – 12 TD – 4 INT
Receiving: 22 receptions – 404 yards – 3 TD
