PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Deshawn Smith, Nature Coast Tech
Sometimes you just get that “special” one and Deshawn Smith’s season can simply be described as one of the best to ever occur. Where do we begin? All Smith did this season was break record-after-record-after, well–you get the point. He’s the State of Florida’s Mr. Football for this season and also the Class 5A Player of the Year. Smith broke Derrick Henry’s state single-season touchdown record with 66 touchdowns and Henry’s points total as well with 408 and became the Hernando County and Nature Coast Tech All-Time Rushing leader as well. His 3,700+ yards this season are good enough for third all-time in the history of Florida behind the two Henry’s–Derrick–and Frostproof’s Travis Henry. Smith’s actual numbers for this season were 3,715 yards rushing with 60 touchdowns via the ground plus 321 yards receiving on 10 receptions with six touchdowns. Smith finished averaging 15 yard per carry and 286 yards per game while the Sharks enjoyed their best season ever at 12-1. It doesn’t stop there–Smith also compiled 15 tackles from the cornerback position–three of those tackles for loss–plus recorded two sacks, a pass deflection, fumble recovery, caused fumble and a blocked field goal. Oh–and case you were wondering? Smith will leave the program having compiled 7,197 All-Purpose yards when you add up his three years of service on the varsity. Mr Deshawn Smith–we salute you. Congratulations to the BCP 2015 Player of the Year.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
DJ Johnson, Gibbs
The senior QB helped the Gladiators reach the district title and the playoffs on the strength of this 3,300+ yards passing and rushing. Johnson also added 40 touchdowns this season via the ground or the air. Johnson completed 57-percent of his passes (131-of-231) for 2,466 yards through the air with 27 touchdowns and just eight interceptions. When coverages shut down his passing options, he took off and ran–and rushed for 898 yards on 104 carries with 13 touchdowns to his credit. Johnson also added 396 yards on special teams for the Gladiators. Among Johnson’s accomplishments, he rushed for 100+ four times this season and went for 300+ total yards in agate six times this season–missing another two 300+ games by a combined total of just ten yards. Offensive Coordinator Antonio Knox had this to say about his QB: “I held a quarterback camp at 6:00am for a week before the first official day of football season. I spoke this quote to DJ–“Believe in yourself, your abilities. and your own potential. Never let self-doubt hold you captive.–and there go that man!” – DJ took off from there. Everyone measures his height and weight but they never measured his heart. This kid has the heart of a lion. I haver never seen a football player of his caliber in my ten years of coaching. DJ has the ability to bring everyone around him and their game’ to another level. The never-quit mentality formed a special bond with his teammates day-in and day-out.”
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Kyheem Campbell, Armwood
Anywhere–anytime…that’s Campbell’s motto when it comes to finding the ball on defense. This season, the senior OLB/ILB racked up 134 tackles–90 of those solo–and 14 of those for loss. He also added 10 sacks, five QB hurries, two passes deflected, a fumble recovery and a blocked punt. Don’t ask us how much Campbell means to the Hawks and their football program–just ask his Head Coach, Sean Callahan: “We have had a lot of young men that absolutely love playing the game…..the physical grind…..the mental preparation….being a football player!!! Kyheem never missed and NEVER complained. He had himself ready for 16 games and made a lot of plays for us behind the line of scrimmage. Kyheem will be missed!”
SPECIALIST OF THE YEAR
Alex Alhomsi, King
Never underestimate the net worth of the specialists–after all they’re called “specialists” for a reason, correct? They can be your worst nightmare–or your best friend—and this Class of 2017 Kicker/Punter fits the bill of friend for the Lions averaging 41.6 yards per punt this season. His longest punt of the season registered at 55 yards and Alhomsi compiled a massive 25 punts inside the 20 yard-line. Alhomsi was also 7-of-10 from field goal range this season with a long of 50 yards. He was a perfect 12-for-12 on extra points. “Alex is a two-sport athlete with high academics and great character. You will always find with a smile on his face and is described by his teachers as respectful and hard-working. COACH OF THE YEAR
Greg Meyer, Plant City
Simply making it through the season can make you eligible for some sort of award in coaching nowadays–it’s a thankless job and often times the coaches might as well be paying the school to work with all of the hours they dedicate to the school and its craft. There are an insane amount of coaches this one could go to this season. With great excitement we announce Greg Meyer as this years’ recipient of the award. After losing their first game of the season to Armwood, all the first-year head coach do was rattle-off eleven straight victories to finish 11-2 and help guide the Raiders to a position they’d never accomplished in the school’ 100 year history. The Raiders eleven wins were the most ever as well as their appearance in the Class 7A Regional Finals was a first.
