6’6″ 260 Was All City All Conference 2nd Team All State & All Southern one of the best O-linemen to come out of Hills. County. Was a 3yr starter at Auburn & a 1st rd pick (#15 overall) by the 49ers where he played in 4 Pro Bowls.

Larry Smith, Robinson, RB – 1964   
Florida’s only Parade All-American in 1964. Scored 29 TDs in 10 games as a senior in an era when scoring was much lower than today. Finished HS career with 47 TDs. One of the most hotly recruited players out of Florida for decades. Was an All-American for the Florida Gators and a first-round draft pick for the Los Angeles Rams in 1969. Had over 3,000 yards of offense in 6 pro seasons.  6’1″ 215  2x All State 1st team selection… Drafted in the 1st Round of the 1969 NFL draft(#8 0verall) by the LA Rams.

Steve Kiner, Hillsborough, QB/LB – 1965   
6’1″  220  Was All Conference All State on both offense & Defense.  .  Signed a scholarship with the University of Tennessee in 1966. Was named sophomore of the year by the Southeastern Conference in 1967. Led the Volunteers in tackles and was selected a first-team All-American in his junior and senior years. Was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys and played in one Super Bowl during his nine-year NFL career. Was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.

John Reaves, Robinson, QB – 1967   
6’3″ 210 Was state Player of the Year in 1967. High School  All American, 3yr starter at U of FLA  and 1st round NFL pick (#14 overall) of the Eagles played for the Eagles, Bengals, Bandits and the Buc’s.  Selected state’s player of the year in 1967.  Led Robinson to a state runner-up finish to national champion Coral Gables. Signed with University of Florida and started as a sophomore, leading Gators to 9-1-1 record and Gator Bowl victory. Set NCAA record for career TDs in final game. A 1st-round draft pick of Philadelphia Eagles. Eventually played for 5 teams in 9 seasons, throwing for over 3,600 career yards.

Leon McQuay, Blake, RB – 1968   
Prep Career Stats unavailable.  McQuay played college football with the now disbanded University of Tampa Spartans (from 1968 to 1970.) He was the first black athlete to receive a scholarship to UT. “All the Way” McQuay rushed for 3,039 yards, scored 37 touchdowns and was a two time small college All-American in three seasons at Tampa. He rushed for 1,362 yards and scored 22 TDs as a junior. He was inducted into the University of Tampa Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.  McQuay skipped his senior season to sign with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League in 1971. Though small, at 5’9″ and 200 pounds, he had lightning speed and was known as “X-ray”. He took the CFL by storm, rushing for 977 yards and a 7.1 yard per carry average. He was an all star and runner up for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player Award.

Gene Killian, Brandon, OL/DL – 1969  
OL/LB Brandon  6’4″235 c/o70. 1st Team All-State,1st Team All-Regional, 1st Team All-County, 1st Team All-Western Conference. Was the O-line leader of the 1969 State Runner-Ups. 6’0″ 211 All Conference All Suncoast, All State…Led King to an 8-2 mark while leading the county in rushing with 1188 yards with 13 TD.  Also led the county in rushing as a junior with a then school record  1359 yards in 1976.. Went on to Auburn where he was their offensive player of the year in 1981. Was drafted by the Cowboys & played 4 seasons in the League with Dallas, New England & Tampa Bay.

Matt Voglar, Robinson, QB – 1986   
Matt Vogler QB Robinson c/o 87  6’4″ 195  Was an All County All Suncoast selection as a senior. Year after moving to Robinson from Leto. Threw for a school record 2817 yards breaking the record of former Knight John Reaves c/o 68. Also broke Reaves school record for TDs in a season with 23 (since broken by Marcello Trigg in 2003).The Vogler led offence produced two 1,000 yard receivers (Adrian Ward 1027 & J.R.Reed 1120)For only the 2nd time in state history. His 281.7 yard per game average was 2nd best in the nation in 1986 and 4th best in state history at that time. Earned a Scholarship to Auburn but transferred to Texas Christian after a year. At TCU threw for a then NCAA D1 record 690 yards in a single game.

In three years, he caught 62 passes for 1,538 yards and 13 touchdowns.  Newman attended the University of North Carolina and was a four-year letterman in football. Desmond Allison, Robinson, WR – 1997   
Led Robinson to the 1998 Class 4A state semifinals, the school’s first state tournament appearance since 1980… Averaged 34.5 ppg, 10.8 rpg and 9.0 apg as a senior, just missing a triple-double… Finished his career with 2,280 points… Was named Hillsborough County High School Male Athlete of the Year by the St. Petersburg Times after earning all-state honors in basketball, football and track… On the gridiron, he averaged 22.9 yards per catch on 38 receptions. Prep Career stats unavailable.  Jenkins became a three-year starter for the Ohio State Buckeyes football team, starting 38 of his final 39 games, caught 165 passes for 2,898 yards with a 17.6 avg. and 16 touchdowns in his career. He finished career with at least one reception in 38 consecutive games and helped the Buckeyes the capture 2002 BCS National Championship at the 2003 Fiesta Bowl.  His 2,898 yards rank eighth on the Big Ten Conference career-record list, while also topping the previous school all-time record of 2,855 by David Boston. Jenkins earned All-Big Ten Conference honorable mention as a senior after leading the team with 55 receptions for 834 yards with a 15.2 avg and 7 touchdowns while adding 178 yards and a touchdown on 20 punt returns. Elijah David Dukes…graduated from Hillsborough (FL) High in Tampa, FL, the same school attended by major leaguers Carl Everett, Gary Sheffield, Mike Heath, Jason Romano, Vance Lovelace, Floyd Youmans, Dwight Gooden and Nationals prospect Michael Burgess…tossed a no-hitter while attending Jefferson (FL) High prior to transferring to Hillsborough…in 2002, was cited by USA Today as the nation’s best 2-sport athlete…offered a scholarship to play linebacker at North Carolina State University…also played basketball while in high school…is double-jointed.  He was a letterman in football, baseball, basketball, and track lettering four years in the former two sports and two years in the latter two sports. In football, as a junior, he started at both tailback and middle linebacker, was named a Class 3A All-State selection as a linebacker, and rushed for over a thousand yards on offense. His Hillsborough Terriers made the state regional football semifinals during his junior year, and the quarterfinals his senior year. After finishing his high school career, he signed a national letter of intent to play football for North Carolina State University.  Duke passed up on College football and entered the MLB draft. Dukes entered the Devil Rays farm system in 2003. He was highly regarded player.  On April 2, 2007, in his first official at bat, Dukes got his first major league hit with a solo home run to center field in the fifth inning against the New York Yankees.

Lydell Ross, GHS, RB –    2000   
Ross broke Fred Reid’s regular-season rushing record of 2,083 yards and Zain Gilmore’s single-season mark of 2,322.   His 5,120 career yards surpassed the record of 4,591 set by Tampa Catholic’s Earl Reeves.  Along the way, Ross led a Gaither team that had won just eight games in four seasons prior to his junior year to a 17-3 record. That season, the Cowboys advanced to the Class 6A quarterfinals before falling to Melbourne Palm Bay.  An All-State player as a junior. He was a first-team All-Florida and a Super Prep All-American his senior season.  Signed with Ohio State.  He  rushed for 2,426 yards and 26 touchdowns during his career with Ohio State.  In 2004, he rushed for 475 yards (4.1 avg.) and four touchdowns while playing in nine games for the Buckeyes.  Ross signed a free agent deal with the Chargers.

Avious Steadman, Riverview, RB – 2001   
Hillsborough County’s all-time leading rusher, Avious Steadman lead the the Sharks to an 8-2 season, Steadman gained 1,516 yards to finish with 5,320 for his career.  He passed former Gaither running back Lydell Ross held the record of 5,120 yards. As a senior, he bacame the third rusher in as many years to break the mark, following in the footsteps of King’s Fred Reid in 1999 and Ross in 2000.

Tyrone Timmons, Tampa Bay Tech, QB –  2001  
As a junior he lead his team to the school’s first ever District Championship in 2000. He was selected 2nd team All Western Conference and HM All County. As a senior he led his team to the Western Conference Championship and made a return trip to the playoffs. Gregg Lee, Chamberlain, WR – 2002   
All-Florida 5A selection (second team), All-Tampa Tribune Hillsborough County, first team All-Western Conference and All-Western Conference American Division, 44 receptions for 658 yards (14.9 avg.) and 12 touchdowns as a senior three-year starter selected to play in the Hillsborough County All-Star Game.  Signed with University of Pittsburgh.  He played college football for two years at the University of Pittsburgh, during which time he amassed 117 receptions, 2259 receiving yards, and 17 touchdowns. He was not selected during the 2006 NFL Draft, but signed as an undrafted free agent in 2006 with the Arizona Cardinals.

Stephan Garcia, Jefferson, QB – 2006

Derek Winter, Plant, WR – 2006   
Winter holds the county record for most catches in a season (90) and boasts career statistics of 192 overall receptions for 3,717 yards.  Winter caught 192 passes during his four year career with Tampa-Plant for over 4,000 yards scoring 44 touchdowns. He caught 75 passes for 1,668 yards and 18 touchdowns during his senior season (2007). Winter was selected FSWA All-State First Team WR also. One of the state’s most productive wide receivers in 2006, Winter was Mr. Football Robert Marve’s favorite target en route to the Class 4A state championship. Winter finished the season with 90 catches for over 1700 yards and 20 touchdowns. He set a state record by catching 13 passes in the state game alone.

Carlton Jones, Middleton, RB – 2007   
Received interest from Florida, Tennessee and Maryland…rushed for 1,200 yards in back-to-back seasons…scored 16 touchdowns as a senior…started out his junior season playing quarterback before moving to running back half way through the year… an Old Spice Red Zone High School Football Player of the Year…all-county and all-state honorable mention as a senior…chose FSU over Toledo.
