Pinellas County Clash – Largo at East Lake

Week One action is behind us, and Week Two may be heavily influenced by Tropical Storm Hermine, but we’ve still got quite a bit of stuff to talk about. The BCP Game of the Week will be where Largo and East Lake face off in Tarpon Springs. Here’s a little bit of a game preview for Friday’s game.

East Lake WR Bryce Miller will need to have another big game receiving in order to get a win against Largo.

Both teams will come into Friday’s game with a perfect 1-0 record – the Packers defeated Seminole 40-2, while East Lake had a much more contested game in their 38-35 win against Palm Harbor University. The Pack will get their first challenge of the year – which will show the next few steps that they may have to take in order to win their district. East Lake will get another test before they go on the road to face Lake Brantley (Alamonte Springs).

The East Lake quarterback battle was fierce going into fall camp, but it now seems like Bob Hudson found his man. QB Tyler Rupe was 10 for 18 with 194 yards passing with four touchdowns against PHU. “Coach hasn’t called him the number one guy really, but it seems like he is. Tyler and I have a lot of trust and really good chemistry,” said East Lake WR Bryce Miller, who had three of Rupe’s four touchdowns and 146 yards receiving.

We’ve seen a lot of Miller on the camp circuit this offseason, and he’s seen a lot of Largo guys during that time. One of the main guys in the secondary for the Pack is Jaquan Hiers, who may be small, but he can certainly pack a punch on both sides of the ball. “We’re just going to go at him like we would any other guy, we’re not going to change our plans for him,” Miller said.

The Largo defense picked off Seminole three times in last week’s game, and they added four sacks. The sacks came from guys you would completely expect, Florida commit Jaquaze Sorrells and Bobby Roundtree. “Playing East Lake is a lot more pressure packed because of their line. They’ve got a lot of good, big, quality linemen that can be a hassle to get around,” Roundtree said. “For me, I’ve got to go out, be myself, think about the next play, and go at them full speed.”

Roundtree will also play a little bit of tight end, but if the Pack throw five passes like they did against Seminole, East Lake may have the advantage. Largo has been known for their rushing offense, especially after graduating some gifted rushers over the years – Dexter McCluster, John Clark, and Marcus Paschal (now their Head Coach) just to name a few, and they’re going to keep it going. They’ve got a quarterback in Isaiah Bellamy that can run the system – and he did that with 90 rush yards on five attempts.

Bellamy is aware of the threat in the East Lake secondary, Tupac Blanch, who was disruptive in the passing game against PHU. “There’s gaps in every defense,” Bellamy said. “We’ve got a good running game, so we’ll run it down their throats if we have to. We know that we’re never out of a game.”

On the East Lake side, OL Spencer Schmuckie will lead the offensive line to a tough task in stopping Sorrells and Roundtree, and it’s going to take a lot of guts in order for the Eagles to stop the Pack. Last season, East Lake won 28-25 in overtime, something fresh in the minds of the Packers and Packer fans. “If we would’ve had one extra push, I really think that we would’ve got the game,” Bellamy said. “Missing extra points was big in last year’s game, but we’re going to come out hungry and humble.”

The Packers and the Eagles will square off from Tarpon Springs at 7:30 (depending on weather), in a competitive game no matter who you’re rooting for.
