AROUND THE STATE

Cromie DOES play that: Weeki Wachee QB, Alec Cromie

Only entering just his third season of playing football after making the transition from being a hoops player, this member of the Class of 2017 is ready to help his Hornets leave a sting in their opponents this Friday versus Wesley Chapel and into the Fall. Cromie produced solid numbers as a sophomore in spite of Weeki’s tough season that ended up with just one victory. The Hornets signal-caller threw for 1,346 yards and even contributed with an average punt yardage of 37 yards per kick and even a couple of 60-yarders as well.

Although Cromie recognizes his footwork is what’s needing the biggest improvement, you can’t teach the frame he’s got at 6-foot-3, 200-pounds that comes with a strong arm and the self-motivation to work every single day at his position.
Cromie says he needs to “try harder” in the classroom and that although being in the classroom feels like it comes naturally to him, he could do better. But wait, you ready for a chuckle? He has a 3.7 GPA. Hard to say that ANYONE is going to put loftier expectations on himself than this young man. Hard to believe there isn’t a single coach in America that would look at that statement and not believe this is a properly-wired young man in his approach to the game and everything that surrounds it.

Here are a few of Cromie’s own words with regards to Weeki Wachee’s program and his personal goals set for the upcoming season:

Q:How would you rate the progress this offseason has gone thus far?
A:”We’re definitely coming through as a program as a whole such as doing off-the-field stuff and heading off to camps with the Marines and things like that. All these extra things away from the field help us to become a tighter family and that has started to show on the field this Spring.”

Q:Are there any major differences you feel or see versus this time last season?
A:”With our larger coaching staff, everyone’s making sure they’re doing everything right. They’re being watched to-a-tee as practice goes on. There’s definitely an air of accountability that’s taking place. This year I think it could be a really big season for our program.”

Q:You have any personal goals set-in-stone at the moment?
A:”This past season was only my third season of playing football, and being that inexperienced I didn’t understand the reading coverages aspect of it and just a lot of things with the faster pace, but working on those things for this season coming up I’m much more confident in my abilities. Going to all these offseason camps and on top of the QB coach we have everything just seems to be falling into place much better this time than last season.”
