HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY

That Night that Was in Hillsborough:The Hay is Officially in the Barn

Now that the coffee has kicked in, let’s go over some more details shall we?

Armwood 38   Hillsborough 16
The most important stat at the end of the game is the score. Again, Armwood’s score was higher than Hillsborough’s. The Hawks proved that they are deserving of their #1 ranking after beating the now, 6-2 Terriers. Next week, Hillsborough faces King. If the Terriers happen to be defeated by King, this turns the 6A-8 upside down. Should not happen, but if it does, there could be a problem. Both Hillsborough and Jefferson would have 2 district losses, but Hillsborough would have beaten Jefferson head to head. Hmmm! What will happen?  Armwood winning the district is the only guaranteed pass into the postseason in this group. Next up for the Hawks, some school named Plant? What is this rivalry you speak of? Can’t wait. Charlie Weiss got a glimpse into the future watching his Class of 2012 Commit Matt Jones rush for 121 yards on 27 carries. Jones also added a TD. The Hawks also accumulated 16 1st downs to Hillsborough’s four.

Blake 32  Lennard 7
Yellow Jackets dominate the Longhorns holding Lennard to just 138 of total offense. Blake Defense scored 3 TD’s picking up their 2nd win in District 8-5A.

Brandon 35  Riverview 14
7A-8 is ALIIIIIIIIIVE! Brandon beat Riverview, that was suppose to happen. But with the win over the Sharks, they just pumped Red Bull in district 7A-8. Time to circle the showdown between Brandon and Plant City next week. The Eagles have come on strong since a shaky start, and as of right now following their shootout with East Bay, next week’s date with Plant City doesn’t look to be such a given in the Raiders direction. Eagles scored 28 of their 35 points in the 1st Half essentially icing the game. Brandon RB Tyrell Garner goes nuts with 3TD’s including a 78yd run in the 2nd Half.

Chamberlain 32  Wiregrass Ranch 0
Chiefs pick up their 1st win of the season rushing for over 200 yards. Xavier Johnson was in beastmode as he ran for 3TD’s totaling 147yards on 21 carries. Johnson also returned a Wiregrass Kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown.

Durant 33  Newsome 14

Durant back to winning ways and Newsome still having problems defending. Durant now 2-1 in the 7A-8 and 5-2 overall, with their only district loss to Plant City. The Cougars controlled this game from top to bottom. The Wolves are going to have nightmares of Jamarlon Hamilton for some time to come. Junior RB rushed 27 times for 172 yards and a touchdown. Durant finishes the game rushing for over 250 yards in this one.

Gaither 37  Freedom 0
By virtue of Tampa Bay Tech’s win over Steinbrenner, the Cowboys assured themselves of nothing less than 2nd place in the District 7-7A Standings. That’s not what’s on their mind. The District Championship is on the line for Gaither next week when they face the Titans. Sophomore QB Alex McGough completed 72% of his passes in route to a 13-18, 172yards and 3TD performance through the air. McGough also rushed for another Cowboy TD. Gaither finished the game with over 300 yards of offense and are one of Hillsborough’s hottest teams at the moment.

Jefferson 22  Sickles 0
Tyriq McCord made the statement that the Dragons goal was to win the remaining 5 games on their schedule. They are on the right path in doing so. The shutout of Sickles and the win over King is the Dragon team the county expected to see earlier this season. Arguably, the toughest schedule in the county, Jefferson proved that a Gryphon is no match for a Dragon.
Jefferson rushed for 214 yards and nearly doubled Sickles’ 1st downs 14-8 while handing the Gryphons their 3rd loss in a row in the murderers row of 8-6A.

Plant City 43  East Bay 36
Defense decided not to show up for either team I guess. This arena game totaled 79 points. The question going into this game, could Plant City bounce back from an emotional hard fought game against Alonso to prepare for the option of East Bay? Obviously, the offense showed up in a big way, but 36 points is too much for a playoff caliber team to allow.

Plant 48  Alonso 6
2 game skid for the Ravens, but I never saw this bird napping coming. Would the Ravens catch Plant looking ahead to Armwood? Nope, not at all! Complete domination by the Panthers. I think the score says the rest.

Robinson 35  Spoto 14
The Knights kept their postseason alive in advance of their showdown with Lakewood at Jack Peters next week.

Strawberry Crest 37  Leto 32
This one lived up to the hype. Each team playing to avoid a winless season. Big plays, ejections, “the whole 9”. Karel Hamilton returns 2TD’s for touchdowns against the Falcons. Also added another on a TD pass from Trey Vandergrift before the Sophomore was injured and did not return to action.

Tampa Bay Tech 35  Steinbrenner 25
Steinbrenner had a good run, but the Titans and the Cowboys will tango for the District title. A strong second half on both sides of the ball put the Titans over the top in this one. Looks like the Warriors “got theirs”, but didn’t get enough.

Wharton 49   Bloomingdale 24
The law firm of Hargreaves, Litton, and Paige showed up for this very important 6-8A matchup. The Wildcats amassed 570 yards with RB Darius Paige taking full honors. The Senior FB rushed for 251 yards on 31 carries and 3TD’s. Not to be outdone Sophmore QB Chase Litton “only” threw 14 times, but connected on eight of those for 258 yards and 2TD’s. His favorite target apparently was Nyere Thompson who finished the game with 3 catches for 120 yards and a TD. The Wildcats now travel to Westchase to battle for their postseason lives against Alonso in 2 weeks.
