Player of the Year

Terrell Crosby – Lakewood – 2022 ATH

Crosby is the definition of a utility player. This young man can do it all. This season, Crosby accumulated 1,413 all-purpose yards and 10 total touchdowns. Most of that production came with him playing receiver where he hauled in 55 receptions for 818 yards and 5 touchdowns. He also had 138 rushing yards and 1 rushing touchdown. He had over 200 yards in kick returns. Then you jump to his defensive stat lines. The Iowa State signee had 10 interceptions with 253 yards in returns and 3 returned for touchdowns. He had 55 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, and 1 fumble recovery which he returned 19 yards for a touchdown. He is a gifted football player who should contribute immediately for the Cyclones. Offensive Player of the Year

Joquez Smith – Jesuit – 2023 RB

Smith finished his junior season with 1,990 total yards, 30 touchdowns, and most importantly, a state championship. During his five playoff games, he ran for 660 yards and 11 touchdowns. His best performance of the season was in the state semifinal against Miami Northwestern when he ran for 234 yards and 3 touchdowns. Check those game highlights out here. Smith will be one of the top returning backs in the state next year.  The 5’8” 190 pound athlete has a great skillset that will make him a valuable target for colleges from across the country. Jesuit finished the season with a perfect 15-0 record.

Defensive Player of the Year

Keyon Clark – Tampa Bay Tech – 2022 DE

Tampa Bay Tech’s defense was outstanding this season, and Clark was one key reasons why. The 6’3” 230 pound senior finished the season with 75 tackles, 36 tackles for loss, 17 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 2 recoveries, and a safety. He is a high energy player. He plays with aggression and possesses a relentless motor. In the state semifinal against a very talented Lake Gibson team, Clark recorded 8 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks. His disruptive performance propelled the Titans to a 42-24 victory over the Braves. The Titans finished the season with a 14-1 record. Here is some of Clark’s Senior Season Highlights.

Special Teams Player of the Year

Jean Carlos Sanchez – Sebring – 2023 K

Sanchez had a great year for a Sebring team that made some noise in the playoffs. On kickoffs, Sanchez managed 20 touchbacks. He was successful on 38 out of 40 extra point attempts. On field goal attempts, he made 10 out of 12 with his longest coming from 45 yards out. His highlight game was the 13-12 playoff upset of Clearwater when he made 2 field goals, including the game-winner. Sebring finished the season with a 9-4 record. Coach of the Year

Matt Thompson – Jesuit

Following last year’s heartbreaking 16-13 state semifinal loss to American Heritage, Thompson led a masterful effort to regroup and refocus. The Tigers finished 2020 with a 14-1 record. They graduated their starting quarterback, but had a lot of talent coming back. The excitement really cranked up after a week two win over St. Thomas Aquinas. Thompson and his staff did a great job of keeping this team focused. They played disciplined football each and every week. Discipline is an expectation for Thompson. Defensively, the Tigers posted seven shutouts and allowed just 126 points in 15 games. Offensively, with a new starting quarterback who is just a sophomore, they scored 568 points throughout those 15 games. Under his guidance, the Tigers put together a perfect 15-0 season and earned the 6A State Championship; Jesuit’s first championship since 1968. Overall, Thompson now has a 99-22 record since becoming Jesuit’s head coach in 2013. During those nine seasons under his guidance, they have won 8 district championships, 6 regional championships, and now, 1 state championship. With players like Joquez Smith and Luke Knight returning, the Tigers will bring back plenty of talent in 2022. So who knows, maybe it won’t be 53 years until they win another one.
