2020 ALL BCP

2020. That’s it. That’s all there is to say. Well, there’s plenty more to say in all actuality. This year may have been a complete circus in all forms of life, but the year 2020 was also a season of blessings for a few teams. It might not have ended how anybody wanted with the Tampa Bay Area getting shutout of a ring across eight classes, but this season was a testament to the yeoman’s work and sacrifices from the parents to the coaches, and most importantly—the kids. We got some special performances from some special people this year, and these five below are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the jobs well done by all throughout the Bay Area and 13 counties that BCP represents. So, while the storm rages outside in many different forms, let us sit back and enjoy the blessings on this Christmas Day. Let’s all sit down and give a moment to recognize the ballers throughout this paradise of ours. Ladies and Gentlemen, we present to you the 2020 All-BCP Teams. Enjoy.

Player of the Year: Joseph Pesansky, Quarterback, Jesuit High School

Joseph Pesansky, Jesuit

Prior to 1940, Jesuit was known as Tampa College High School. They joined the FHSAA some seven years before that in 1933. In that span, the Tigers have finished with a state championship, nine regional titles, and with several one-loss seasons, but never with a 13-1 record—which would make 2020 their best record in school history. An integral part of that process was a big-time transfer with a big-time frame from Virginia by way of Philadelphia. His name is Joseph Pesansky and the Holy Cross Commit finished the season #2 in the Sunshine State in passing yards with 2,930 completing 63% of his passes (164-for-259), 35 touchdowns, and just 5 interceptions with a QB rating of 133.5 averaging over 200 yards per game. The Class of 2021 6’-4”/205-pounder went for 300+ yards three times this season against Robinson (323), River Ridge (323), and Jones (334) in what was mentioned a historic season for one of Tampa’s most-historical programs.

Offensive Player of the Year: Tre Simmons, Quarterback, Bloomingdale High School

Tre Simmons, Bloomingdale

Moving along with the theme of making history, this 2021 signal-caller helped propel the Bulls to their best season in the school’s 34-year history. While there was plenty of talent on the field around him, there was NO DOUBT who the maestro of their offensive masterpiece this season. Simmons oversaw a campaign that finished at 153-for-261 for 2,490 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He also chipped in with 400 yards of rushing with another 11 touchdowns. Simmons saw his month of October look like near perfection with over 100 QB ratings in all five games during that span. Simmons also threw for 13 touchdowns in his last 5 games leading up to the state semifinals against St. Thomas Aquinas. Perhaps his best movement within the orchestral piece was his work against Armwood, Lakeland, Plant City, and Tampa Bay Tech. Simmons and the Bulls went 7-0 against those teams this season defeating Armwood, PC, and Tech twice each, and Lakeland by 25 points at Bryant Stadium. Simmons was 106-of-190 for 1,441 yards with 15 touchdowns and 8 interceptions against those squads, which is a complete season or even a career for a lot of guys at this level. He will finish his HS career at Bloomingdale (2 seasons) having thrown for 4,956 yards, rushed for 737 yards, with a combined 65 touchdowns.

Defensive Player of the Year: AJ Cottrill, Middle Linebacker, Jesuit High School

AJ Cottrill, Jesuit

We’ve already mentioned Jesuit’s historical season, so let’s jump right into this prototypical linebacker who was everything the Tigers needed him to be and then some this season. The 6’-1”/210-pound junior finished off his 2020 with 208 tackles (104 solos), which was good enough to be tops in Florida in this category and good for an average of 15 tackles per game. He also finished with 13 tackles for loss, three sacks, and an interception. Cottrill was also money-good for 89 tackles in the playoffs, hitting 20+ tackles in a night twice (Clearwater –20, and American Heritage Plantation –24) while hitting 17 tackles twice (Tampa Catholic and Chamberlain), 18 tackles twice (Bishop Moore and Jones), and 19 tackles twice against Bishop Verot and Berkeley Prep. An interesting side note, he has totaled 372 tackles in 32 games. Needless to say, his senior season could be one for the record books.

Specialist of the Year: Maguire Anderson, ATH, Mitchell High School

Maguire Anderson, Mitchell

The Mustangs enjoyed their most successful season in existence and first regional championship appearance since the school opened in 2000, and one of those reasons was winning in all three phases of the game. On the special teams’ side, it was the 6’-1” 185lb senior Maguire Anderson that was a true return specialist in both kickoffs and punts. Anderson returned nine kicks for a total of 382 yards and two touchdowns. His average of 42.4 yards per return was good enough for 5th in the state. His KO touchdowns came in games against Wiregrass Ranch and Leto. On the punt return side, he brought back 16 punts for 257 yards and two touchdowns. Both of those scores coming against Cypress Creek. Anderson’s 639 total return yards was good enough for 29th in the nation and 4th statewide.

Coach of the Year: Jake Coulson, Bloomingdale High School

Jake Coulson, Bloomingdale

In some spans since their inception in 1987, the Bulls have taken eight years to win 12 games. This season, it took them precisely one. In just his second season as Bloomingdale’s Head Coach, Jake Coulson guided his Bulls to their first-ever state seminal while finishing a school-best 12-1. Coulson took over for Max Werner last season after being on staff as the defensive coordinator, and immediately implemented his Texan-tough mentality, which manifested itself countless times during the Bulls’ run to history this season. If someone would have told us that Bloomingdale would go on to defeat the likes of Armwood, Plant City, and Tampa Bay Tech multiple times while defeating Lakeland by four touchdowns AT Bryant Stadium before 2020 started, we would have had them committed to the crazy house. What we thought was crazy, was a belief all along for Coulson and his staff. Entering into next season with a 21-4 record over two seasons, Coulson has the chance to pass his predecessor for all-time winningest coach (Warner was 24-10) with just four wins.

All BCP Is a Regional Team covering Citrus, Charlotte, Desoto, Hardee, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Manatee, Sarasota, Sumter – 132 teams coving 13 counties. We reserve the right to make additions at any time.
