Merry Christmas! It’s the most wonderful time of the year for a plethora of reasons, and you can certainly include the 2019 edition of the BCP Players and Coach of the Year to that list. It doesn’t need to be said that with 13 counties of teams to choose ballers from, distinguishing the cream-of-the-crop is a daunting task—one that was given full attention, and one that saw painstaking breakdowns. We hope you enjoyed the season and the countless young men that gave their best as much as we did. We are honored to present to you these four young men and one quintessential leader of young men, and we are proud to call them the best-of-the-best. Congratulations from all of us at Big County Preps!
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: DeAngelo Sapp, Lake Wales, 2020 ATH
16 /71/1288 – The older generation will appreciate the numbers this young man posted. The epitome of a throwback high school player. Sapp racked up 16 interceptions and 71 solo tackles while totaling 1,288 all-purpose yards. Wowzers is correct. Check these numbers out for Sapp: 100 receiving yards, 349 kick return yards, 491 punt return yards, and 348 yards off interceptions. The 2019 BCP player of the year recorded multiple interceptions 5 games this season. 4 INTs versus Bartow with 110 interception return yards.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Tony Bartalo, Gaither, 2020 QB
45 – The number of touchdown passes for T.B. in 2019. Did you know Tony B. threw 11 touchdowns as a junior? This season he increased that number by 4 times. 3,194 passing yards completing .626 percentage of his passes. Two 300 passing yards performances. 10 games throwing for 200 yards or more. 8 games with four or more TDs passes.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Cole Castro, River Ridge, 2021 DB
10 – The number of interceptions for Cole Castro this season. Teams tried the junior Royal Knights defensive back way too often and he made them pay. Castro posted at least one INT in all but three games this season. Versus Wesley Chapel, Zephyrhills and Anclote #27 took the ball away twice. Add 55 total tackles, 38 solo tackles and 24 pass breakups, Castro was tough to beat.
SPECIALIST OF THE YEAR: Deon Silas, Steinbrenner, 2021 RB
47.6 – The kick return average for Deon this season. Want to talk about special? Silas was just that. 614 total return yards, 2,058 all-purpose yards, and 24 total TDs. Offensively, Silas was as special as it gets. A true threat each time he was on the field. In 8 of 14 games, he scored multiple TDs. 5 coming on either a punt or kickoff return.
COACH OF THE YEAR: Kendrick Stewart, Victory Christian
“Stewart, a former all-state defensive lineman at Lakeland who played at Florida State, led his team to an 11-2 record and state runner-up finish” – .theledger.com. Victory Christian is 33-6 with Stewart as head coach the past three seasons.
