2011 Preview: Alpha Dogs

ALPHA OFFESNSE

1 Armwood
The massive offensive line and the multiple number of skilled athletes makes the Hawks the most deadly offense starting the 2011 season. Unofficially, Armwood totaled 5600 yards of offense in 2010; 2300 through the air and 2800 on the ground. Returning a 1500 yard 6-3/220lb tailback doesn’t hurt their argument either. Since converting to the spread offense a few years ago, the Hawks have been a vertical team that looks to strike early an fast. This fits perfectly with junior quarterback Darryl Richardson’s strength. As he will tell you, “I have a deep ball for ya”!

2 Plant
The Panthers have become an extremely balanced team since the departure of Aaron Murray. Last season the Panther’s unofficial numbers were 2900 yards passing and 2650 rushing. Their balance and methodical play calling on offense earn them the #2 spot. James Few brings accuracy to the quarterback position as he will have a number of talented receivers to zoom in on.

3 Countryside
The leadership of quarterback, Gray Crow, the big offensive line and the tremendous ability of running back Diomi Roberts, makes countryside a solid #3 pick. C-side was 4th in our coverage area in total offense in 2010. Ripping up the gridiron with a heavy dose of the run, 3000 yards and just enough through the air to keep the opposing defense honest, 1450 yards.

4 Plant City
In Bennie Coney’s absence last season, the Raiders still accumulated 4000 total offensive yards. So now, the PC boys return a more focus Bennie Coney at QB, a light footed offensive line and a running back who gained 1300 of the Raiders 1850 rushing yards. The Raiders schedule is also favorable that will allow them to post big numbers this season.

5 Newsome
Surprise Surprise! You know Newsome is going to run the ball. Now you have to stop Newsome from gaining yards running the ball. Newsome was held under 220 yards rushing, once last season. That was to Armwood, game 1 of the 2010 season. The Wolves averaged 320 yards a game on the ground and 7.5 yards per car. That’s a 1st down every other snaps for the Newsome offense. Keller Powers replaces “big bro” Conner Power at full back. Accompanied by wing back, Royce Easley, Clint Carnell and QB Will Worth, the Newsome offense is a safe #5 selection.

ALPHA DEFENSE

 1 Armwood
No real need to expand on the reason here. 112 total points allowed in 2010, 960 total tackles and 50 sacks. Fast at every position and I will go on history before anything else here.

2 Spoto
Spoto lost a lot of stud athletes but they still return a good defensive front and line backers that totaled 1032 tackles, 48 sacks and only allowed 177 points last year as a team.

3 St. Pete High
I’m not too familiar with St. Pete, but I do know that a team which only allowed 140 points last season and 44 sacks is built more on a system, not so much athletes. For this reason, the Green Devils rank high.

4 Tampa Bay Tech.
Big, fast, athletic and well coached. Titans return studs on defense from a 2010 team that allow just 196 total points.

5 East Lake
As a team, the 2010 Eagles allowed 165 points and totaled 22 interceptions. Blessed with youth and size, the Eagles have a chance to be very good again on defense.
