RECRUITING

Recruiting Mailbag: What happened to Leon, getting recruited and D2

Michael: There take several dedicated students to make up a football team. Jesuit High School has approximately 50 students that have dedicated time and effort to their team. It seems as though the only players BCP give notice to is Travis and Vincent. Why is that? On the team you have players like Reggie Brown, Brad Smith, Parker Clonts, Cameron Ruff , Robbie Garcia and others that are ranked and set great examples of teamwork. What must they do to get notice by BCP?

BCP: The hardest part about what we do as far as providing a media presence is “The balancing act.” How do we promote as many kids as possible without leaving out the kids who we also assisted in starting the recruiting process for years ago? How do we push new names along with feeding a large viewing audience who wants to know about the studs? We will not be right either way. All the Jesuit players mentioned are GOOD!  The biggest thing in regards to the players mentioned, is access. we have had access and still do have access to Travis and Vincent for years now. Reggie Brown has been very good to us. The other players have been mentioned several times. See the links below.

Sean: If a D1 school offers you is it possible that D2 schools will/or can offer too?

BCP: Yes. Especially if the D2 school has some indication that a player will not make it academically or fall on recruiting charts.

Tom: What happen on Monday with Leon McQuay III? Who do think he was going to commit to before he canceled his announcement? Do you think his dad is too involved in his recruitment and is not letting L3 make his choice on his own?

BCP: Funny you ask. Monday was a simple logistics issue. Nothing serious. Just all parties involved were not on the same page. I don’t know or have a good guess on where he was going to commit to.  Dad too involved? I know the father well. He is being a father. Rather than, either being non existent or not involved at all. Too involved is subjective. Remember, Leon is a high school, impressionable student, being told 100 different things from 100 different people (not literally) who are grown men. Depending on the dynamics of the household and mentally of the student athlete, it may take a father to be “Too involved” to make sure someone else is NOT “too involved” with HIS son.

Damion: When do you think this Joe Davis kid will start to pick up interest and maybe even offers?  I know he lacks size but he makes up for it in other areas.

BCP: …and so do many other kids. There is no time table on when a specific kid will start to get looks.  He is a good talent.  But colleges don’t just recruit good talent.  They want above average to great talents.  Impact players, special players and standouts are the guys who get noticed first and recruit first. The good players, the solid players, the under recruited players…come next.

Jimmy: How do you start getting recruited?

BCP: Create a buzz. Whether that be from film, camps or showcases, someone has to start to create a demand for a player. That player has to be “A PLAYER!” For example, Vernon Hargreaves buzz started with a solid 2010 sophomore hilite film (Right here on BP). Grew as he attended a few showcases and blew up after he received more media attention and his 1st verbal offer.  To make it simple, If no one knows about you, how can they recruit you?

The buzz can start from many different places. High school coaches pushing video to colleges and colleges feeding the media. Camp and showcase directors feeding information to colleges. Media observations that spread to college coaches. Those are just a few examples. None of that matters if the player is not “A PLAYER!”  Buzz is not gonna start for a player who is better than average!
