HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY RECRUITING FEATURES THE BOX

Meyer takes the lead for the King Lions

The linemen don’t get an extreme amount of attention. The media does not “love ‘em” up as deserved. Especially the offensive linemen. They have no pretty stats to brag about, as the defensive linemen do. No sacks, tackles for loss or caused fumbles. They don’t get a pretty single digit jersey number or really cool looking visor. Wristbands look funny and knee braces become part of the uniform.

However, inside the locker room and to the teammates who align behind them on the field, the offensive linemen are the most important players on a football team.  Guardians to the pretty quarterback and guiding light for the headliner running backs, the linemen are the ultimate role players.

Dennis Meyer is one of the those unloved role players for King High School. He is 6-3/300 lbs. and one of the best offensive linemen in the county. So how does he get overlooked?

Speaking with Meyer, he came across as very soft-spoken, humble and unselfish. He was well aware of his strengths/weaknesses and need to improve them. “I think I have gotten stronger and my footwork has really improved,” says Meyer.

Meyer has been a member of the varsity football team since his freshman year and acknowledges his offensive line coach for the strides he has made to become a dominant football player. “Coach Cox has helped me a lot. He has taught me a lot about footwork”

An offensive lineman, just like any other player at any other position has an opponent who brings out the best in him. Makes him compete at a higher level and turns the volume up on the intensity knob. Teammate, Reggie Butler received high praise from Meyer as the best defensive tackle he has faced. “I would say Reggie, from our football team. Everyday he is always pushing me to get better. We always go at it to see who is better. That really helps me step up. He makes me step up my game more than another defensive tackle I have played against.”

As far as recruiting, Meyer attended the Miami Hurricane summer camp last year, “It was pretty good. It showed me what I need to work harder at.” Currently, he is receiving mail from USF, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech and LSU. In his opinion, USF is recruiting him the hardest as an offensive guard.

Meyer and the Lions are expecting a successful 2012 season. He believes the team has a different attitude from the 2011 team that did not reach expectations, following a solid 2010 season. “I expect a lot. I see a lot of improvement. I think we will surprise some people. We did not play as a team last year.”

If Meyer is correct and all the pieces of the puzzle fit together, the selfless, meek, overlooked 300lbs lineman will lead his team to an eye opening 2012 season. SEE MEYER HILITES HERE
