Waiting on Godwin’s Preseason Explosion

Tampa, FL – The Bucs will finally play in front of their home crowd this Saturday night as the Cleveland Browns come to town for the third preseason game of the 2017 season.

The Buccaneers have kept a long list of receivers on roster throughout training camp evaluating players who will be able help the team and create depth within the unit.

WR Chris Godwin has looked extremely good at practices. The 6 foot 1 inch rookie was selected 84th overall out of Penn State, where he was one of the “most prolific” receivers in school history. During practice we have seen flashes of what made him such a high selection for Tampa Bay. But we haven’t seen those same traits in preseason action?

Over his Penn State career Godwin accounted for 2,404 yards and 18 receiving TDs. Headed into his third professional game Godwin has 3 catches for 44 yards and zero TDs while All Pro teammate Mike Evans is being a ball hog with 9 catches for 115 yards.

Earlier in training camp Bucs head football coach Dirk Koetter said this about Chris Godwin showing out at training camp, “Yeah, he did in OTAs as well. Again, it’s day one. Let’s not set our course for the whole season based on an hour and a half in shorts.”

That’s about how we see it at this time. As good as Godwin has been, it is still extremely early and his preseason game production hasn’t matched his practice play.

As training camp came to an end, Godwin seemed to have earned his respect with his teammates and coaching staff. ”He looked good. Mike was out today so Chris got to work with the first group. Chris has had a couple of quieter days, more because he hasn’t gotten many opportunities. It was good to see him get some chances with Jameis today.” – Dirk Koetter.

Saturday Night, we would love to see Chris Godwin have one of those rookie moments where he excites the fan base. Give us a glimpse of what is to come for the future of the Tampa Bay Bucs.
