LAKELAND – The wide receivers did-the-damn-thing on Sunday collectively as a position group and here are ten names that made some noise. This group is loaded with 2016-prospects, but the pair of 17’s from the same district in Hillsborough County will be worth the price of admission for not just one, but two more years.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Issac Johnson, Zephyrhills Christian (6-3/170) -2016
If you were to look up the definition of what a WR’s should look like on the hoof in this stage of development, then you’d find this young man’s name on that list along with a few others. Johnson has all the tools he needs in his work box to make big plays happen and to be an instant playmaker for the Warriors this fall as they enter 11-man football.
Antoine Thompson, Plant City (6-0/175) -2017
Thompson is one of those 2017’s that is turning heads. Much like Rudy Dawson’s performance on the afternoon, Thompson was consistently beating his defenders off the line of scrimmage and runs routes as crisp as the fall air in late-November. He and QB Corey King II should form a lethal combo on offense for the Raiders this fall.
Kee Whetzel, Countryside (6-4/193) -2016
Whetzel’s another one of those “ideal frames” at the position that is becoming simply a nightmare for defenders to check him. The interesting thing of note is that Whetzel is quite effective as a DB for C’Side so the crossover and application of his skills will be exciting to watch this fall.
Dariaze Kirkland, Lake Gibson (5-9/140) -2016
Don’t let the frame fool you. He’s got that dawg in him like the vast majority of his Lake Gibson teammates and will run circles around defenders if they aren’t ready for some action.
JJ Lewis, Mitchell (6-2.5/178) -2016
Lewis had a pretty good day all-in-all at the camp. We’ve seen some absolutely sick plays from him in the past so we are already fully aware of his skills, but watching him on Sunday reminded us that he’s poised to be one of the top WR’s in all of Pasco County this fall if things go how they should.
Keyshon Hopkins, Crystal River (6-2/175) -2016
This Pirate will make CB’s and safeties walk the plank the entire fall if they want to try him at the line of scrimmage since he will simply blow right past them with his speed and his vertical jumping ability. Big BIG things expected of this young man up in Citrus County this season.
Nata Rodriguez, Zephyrhills Christian (5-7/148) -2016
Rodriguez flashed good hands all day and got open early-and-often in 7-on-7’s. Rodriguez was the MVP at e7 Summer in large part because of the “dawg” that lies within, and Sunday was no different either.
Trey Fullwood, East Bay (6-1/198) -2016
This young man had himself one hell of an afternoon. The recent transfer from Sickles was making plays and doing all the things we thought he was capable of doing for a while. Let’s hope the light has come on and is burning bright which means nothing but good things for the Indians this fall.
Daquon Green, Tampa Bay Tech (6-1/188) -2017
A special talent in the making this wideout is going to be a nationally-known name and soon. The frame is exactly what you’d wish for with two seasons still left to play and the instincts already appear to be on upperclassmen status. This young man “could” help pick up the weight left to carry by Deion Cain’s departure.
Isaiah Thomas, Largo (6-0/170) -2016
Really quick and strong hands are what this young man possesses along with a blossoming capability to be “that playmaker” on offense for the Packers this season.
