Jen: We are with a recruiting service. Our son has been graded low D1 and D2 at several showcases and camps by respected names. The recruiting service continues to match him with D3 schools. They said they won’t match him with D2 schools until he gets offers from D3 and won’t match with D1 until he gets offers from D2. He is visiting many campuses and has 20+ D3 schools very interested and coaches calling frequently as well as a few NAIA and D2 talking. Well, D3 and D2 aren’t going to offer early, so how does he get past this step to further his opportunities?

BCP: Tough situation. However, you are in the same boat as the majority of senior prospects. I would suggest you start working the D2 and smaller 1AA schools and see if you get some bites. If you are paying the recruiting service and they are going to work the d3 angle, be proactive and as a family hit the D2 angle. Email that film to the staffs and work your network of people who may know a coach at that division.

Christian: What are the roles of a basketball head coach?

BCP: Honestly and it will be tough to read/hear: The role of a basketball coach is to win basketball games! That’s it. What he is expected to do is a different story. The public opinion is that a coach should be a mentor, taxi, maid, player promoter to media and college coach, guidance counselor, teacher and ATM at times. But, to win basketball games, a coach has to meet public expectations for the players to play their hardest for him/her.
