POLK COUNTY RECRUITING FEATURES THE BOX

Potential big time 2014 prospect at Kathleen

A few days ago, a BCP follower submitted a question via the BCP mailbag plenty of young prospects, parents and under recruited players have. The question was, “How do you start getting recruited?” Simple and fair question. We answered like this, “Create a buzz. Whether that is from film, camps or showcases, someone has to start to create a demand for a player. That player has to be “A PLAYER!” For example, Vernon Hargreaves buzz started with a solid 2010 sophomore highlight film (Right here on BP). Grew as he attended a few showcases and blew up after he received more media attention and his 1st verbal offer. To make it simple, If no one knows about you, how can they recruit you?”

The answer continued. However, the following deals with exactly that! The buzz. As I searched through the BCP Prospect Questionnaire, I came across a highlight video of a 2014 prospect out of Kathleen High School. The video jumped right off the screen at me. It was not too long, but popped in a big way. I quickly went back to review the questionnaire and the answers submitted. The young man, to his knowledge, is receiving no college interest. No media source has attempted to contact him. Basically, he is an unknown player to everyone except the Kathleen football program.

I got really excited, because this is how the big dogs all start out. I rewound the film and watched this young prospect scream downhill in the alley and face up ball carriers. He took great angles to the football and sorted his way through traffic. He reminded me of Leon McQuay III; Quick twitch, runs the alley and covers ground.

Not wasting anymore time, I called the young man and expressed to him that he had a real chance of being real good. The young man is Kevin Wilson, Kathleen 2014 safety. He was not a starter in the secondary last year for Kathleen (reason why highlight was not very long), waiting his turn behind a senior. He is 6-0/170lbs and can run. Very rangy and covers a lot of ground in a few steps. I asked Kevin a few questions just to hear his response and get some kind of gauge on the kid’s attitude and ambitions.

Questions:
BCP: How good does Kevin Wilson want to be?
Wilson: I want to be great coach. I want to be great so I can provide for me and my family. I just want to be successful.

BCP: Who is helping you get to that point right now?
Wilson: My coaches. My head coach, Eric Strickland and the whole Kathleen coaching staff.

BCP: What is the best decision you have ever made?
Wilson: I was going to switch schools this year. My mother wanted me to switch schools until I actually sat down and talked to her about it. I told her I really didn’t want to switch schools, because I had a better chance of making it at Kathleen rather than a private school.

This could be the beginning of something special for Kevin Wilson. Depending how he develops and his junior season, we could be reading about him on the bigger networks real soon. He is a division 1 prospect for sure. Is he “Big 3” division 1? Only time will tell. But, his buzz starts here. The cycle that continues. SEE KEVIN WILSON HILITES HERE

Note: Will Allen, Springstead 2013 OT highlights have been sitting on the Sunshine Preps network available for college coaches to view for nearly 8 months now. Did will Allen come out of nowhere? No! But, his video was ready for evaluation by colleges a long time ago. SEE HERE
