Northwestern Football Welcomes Early Enrollees Sam Miller & Trey Pugh

Miller_SamEVANSTON, Ill. — Defensive lineman Sam Miller and superback Trey Pugh have enrolled at Northwestern University for the winter academic quarter and will be full team participants throughout the winter workout and spring practice seasons.

“We’re thrilled to officially welcome Sam and Trey to our family here in Evanston,” said Dan & Susan Jones Family Head Football Coach Pat Fitzgerald. “Both have already immersed themselves in Northwestern’s world-class academic environment, and are alongside their teammates in the weight room building the foundation for our 2017 season.”

Miller (Houston, TX/Stratford H.S.) was a First Team All-District defensive end while leading the Spartans to a pair of District Championships. He earned a four-star rating from Scout.com and was a consensus Top-30 defensive tackle in the country according to Scout, Rivals and 247 Sports. Miller was a member of Stratford’s National Honor Society and student council. His brother, Alex, appeared as a true freshman on the defensive line in all 13 games during Northwestern’s 2016 season, and his father, Greg, was an All-Conference defensive lineman at Nevada.

Pugh (Plain City, Ohio/Jonathan Alder H.S.) was a First Team All-Ohio honoree and a three-time All-MOAC selection on both sides of the ball as a wide receiver and linebacker for the back-to-back (2015, ’16) MOAC champion Pioneers. He was ranked by Rivals as a Top-20 player at any position from the state of Ohio and as the 22nd best tight end prospect in the class.

The remainder of the Wildcats incoming freshman class will sign National Letters of Intent on National Signing Day, Wednesday, February 1, and enroll this summer.

Northwestern wrapped up the 2016 campaign with a 31-24 win over No. 23 Pittsburgh at Yankee Stadium in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. The Wildcats are scheduled to return 17 of 22 starters from this year’s squad, including All-Big Ten honorees Justin Jackson, Clayton Thorson, Garrett Dickerson, Solomon Vault and Tommy Doles on offense, as well as Godwin Igwebuike and Montre Hartage on defense.
