Largo defeats Lakewood in final moments: 32-27

Fireworks were expected. Fireworks are what we got. Largo and Lakewood tangoed last night in a game to be remembered, full of big plays, momentum shifts and key players stepping up in key movements. When the clock hit zero, the home team Packers stood with more points than the visitors.

After a 30-minute weather delay, it seemed as though Lakewoood would run away with this game. The Spartans jumped out to an early 13-0 lead in the first half with a combination on Ryan Davis scrambles and Tyriek Hopkins and Malik Foster runs. Largo would stall on the their first 3 possessions, going 2 and out on 2 of the 3 possessions. Largo would finally catch a break as a Jonathan Crawford interception set up a John Clark 60 yard TD run late in the 2nd quarter.

Lakewood got the ball back with 2 minutes left in the half and the drive would stall as the Packer defense muscled up. Lakewood forced to punt, Largo’s Brandon Drayton blocks the kick, picked up the loose ball and returned it for a Largo TD. Both teams entered halftime tied at 13.

Start of the 3rd quarter, Largo QB Donavan Hale hit Dakarai Allen for a 24-yard TD pass. Ryan Davis and the Lakewood offense orchestrated a big drive plowing over the Packer defense and finishing it off with 6-yard TD pass from Davis to Adrian Adams (score LW 21 LG 19). A Big Jonathan Crawford kick off return put Largo in position to strike for the second time of the half as Donavan Hale converted a 4th down and 4 with his legs and John Clark finished off the drive with a 7 yard TD run.

At the start of the 4th quarter Largo held a 26-21 lead. After both teams traded punts, Lakewood’s Lamontez Pritchett made a crucial Interception giving his offense the ball back on the-38 with 4:30 left to play in the game. A masterful offensive play calling possession for Lakewood full of boots and rollouts, ended with a 2 yard rush TD by Hopkins. The extra point would fail and Lakewood led 27-26 with fewer than 3 mins to play.

Largo started off deep with the ball at their own 27-yard with 2:38 on the clock. On 2nd and 10, Packers picked up 9 yards on screen to Clark. They converted on 3rd and 1 at the -38. The following set of downs, Hale found Isaiah Thomas for a 12-yard gain on 4th and 7. Hale it Allen again for a big gain to put the Packers inside the 10-yard line. On 3rd down and 8, Packers offensive coordinator drew up a simple pass route for Jonathan Crawford and Hale found his main man right across the goal line for the go ahead score.
