Updated with video: Lakewood scrimmage notes

Lakewood head football coach, Cory Moore held a controlled scrimmage tonight. After two solid weeks of camp, the coaching staff wanted to evaluate their team and observe the execution on both sides of the ball. As coaches always say, “It’s never as good as it looks or as bad as it looks.” Meaning, the staff can’t criticisize the performance until they review the film.

AT FIRST GLANCE
The Spartans are still trying to create an identity on the ground. The passing game is well ahead of the ground game which the Spartan still attempted to work tonight. In the air, Lakewood is Lakewood. Tracy Johnson manufactured numerous scoring drives hitting several targets.

The defense was very fast and athletic. There were a few blown assignments and a few times players were out of position. But, that is why a team scrimmages this time of year. Better to clean up the mistakes before they take the field next week.

Joc Ellison, slot – Awesome night. Made some big time catches over defenders and in traffic.

Tracy Johnson, QB – Great night. He saw the field very well, moved in the pocket and escaped from trouble when needed. Threw several nice balls in tight space and showed good touch.

Adrian Palmoure, TE – Caught the ball like a man. Excellent receiver in traffic. Attacked the football tonight.

Marquez Valdes, WR – Solid night. Did not get a lot of balls thrown in his direction.

Ben Bryant, CB – Made some really good plays tonight. Young prospect with long arms and ability.

Malcolm Erving, LB – Around the ball all night. Really scrapped and disengaged from blockers well.

Austin Copeland ILB – Filled the holes like a ILB should. Very aggressive and tackled well.
