Wharton’s Godey Coleus is trending in the right direction, and it could not have come at a better time for the Wildcats as they prepare for spring ball and beyond. The 6-foot-1, 250-pound class of 2016 defensive lineman is coming off a 2014 season that produced 63 tackles, good for third on the team. Strikingly, 20 of those were tackles for loss in addition to 6.5 sacks resulting in over 60 yards lost. Coleus was also credited with hurrying the quarterback 20 times, caused five fumbles, and even blocked a field goal in a 7-6 win over Riverview. That kind of playmaking (and literal game changing) ability has to come in bunches for Wharton if the Wildcats are going to make their way through a formidable district; one that could be tricky with Plant, Sickles, Gaither, Freedom, Wiregrass Ranch and Leto included in it. Wharton’s staff would prefer his upward trend to begin in their spring game versus King as part of the jamboree at Hillsborough on May 21st, however. Coleus made an instant impact in the offseason, starting with his performance at Ignite back in January earning an invite to the Executives later this summer. He also shined as a part of Wharton’s squad that participated in the ‘Bull in the Ring’, posting a lightning-fast 7.22 seconds in the sled pull, then followed that with a 20.44 second time in the 9-cone topping it all off with 41 reps in the dumbbell press. Of course things change when the pads come on, but Coleus is starting to figure things out from a technical standpoint and has established through his work rate this offseason that it is his time to shine.
