No surprises at Lakewood. As expected, another team saturated with talent. Coach Moore is super excited about his group. He praised their off-season training and early attitudes during the first few days of spring practice.
The Spartan are coming off a great 2013 season just missing the state finals in a close loss to Clay in the state semi-finals. On a good note, many pieces from that same team return for the Spartans. Ryan Davis will again take snaps. The rising senior will take the field in the fall as a 3-year starter and hopefully end his career as a 4-year varsity starting QB and more importantly a champion. He threw the ball really well yesterday showing great ball placement and velocity. Savion Smith, Sekendic Biddines transferred from Boca Ciega and will be huge additions to the Spartan air attack. Along with production from Tyrell Hubbard-Smith and Adrian Adams, Lakewood has some guys that can make plays after the catch. On the ground, Lakewood will be in good hands. Tyriq Hopkins and Romello Pressely will handle the duties. A thunder and lightning combo, when the offensive line gels, these two will put up some good numbers.
The defense will need some retooling. However the strength of the defense last year was in the secondary, a group that rarely gave up TDs through the air. A mixture of Savion Smith, Tyrell Hubbard-Smith and others will combine to make another talented group of defensive backs. The Line backing group will have some new faces along with the defensive line. Speed defensive end, Jordan Edwards returns for his senior campaign. 20 plus sacks last season earned him 1st Team All BCP honors and if he replicates that performances, Lakewood’s chances to return to the semi finals will increase substantially.
