Gaither Jamboree winners: Steinbrenner, Alonso

At the Gaither Jamboree

Steinbrenner 13, Sickles 0

The Warriors displayed a balanced offense and bend but don’t break defense. Offensively, rising junior quarterback Cason Byrd hit on 6-of-12 passes for 100 yards including a 53-yard hitch & go touchdown pass to rising junior wide receiver Brett Bitter on the Warriors’ first play from scrimmage. Byrd also showed athleticism on a 30-yard scramble with a nice cutback on his team’s second drive. Rising senior running back Jayquese Dantley carried the load on the ground with 14 rushes for 75 yards including breaking 5 tackles on his 21-yard TD run. Rising junior slot receiver Carson Kaleo had 3 receptions for 41 yards including a couple of third-and-long conversions to keep drives alive. Can’t do all that in a half without mentioning that the Warriors offensive line played pretty well overall.

Defensively, rising senior defensive lineman Andre Washington was a standout with 3 tackle-for-losses, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and he teamed with rising senior linebacker Tyler Mirabella on a sack. Rising senior LB Pat Lukert had a sack & he set the tone on the first play from scrimmage with a tackle-for-loss. Steinbrenner cornerbacks rising senior Jeremy Lemmon and rising junior Ryan Bogdanski had tight coverage downfield with Bogdanski also intercepting a pass and returning it 25-yards late in second quarter to stop a Gryphons drive.

Sickles’ offense made some big plays including rising senior QB Chris Oladokun’s 23-yard run to convert a 3rd-and-long, rising junior Anthony Quintana’s two catches behind the line-of-scrimmage which he turned into 33 and 20 yards gains after breaking tackles, and rising senior FB/LB Cameron Miller added a 19-yard run but the Gryphons were not able to get the ball in the end zone.

The Gryphons Defense was led by Cameron Miller who had 3 sacks and a forced fumble in only a half.

Alonso 20, Gaither 7

The Ravens did not attempt a pass with rising sophomore QB Alex Laccabue but instead use their offensive line to open holes for two rising senior running backs, Josh Elias and Derrick Walker. Elias was elusive and had 10 carries for 82 yards including TD runs from 20 and 8 yards and Walker used a number of spin moves and had  14 carries for 72 yards but had 3 touchdown runs of 43, 10, & 3 yards called back due to penalties.

Defensively, Alonso had 3 sacks, one each by rising juniors Obie Cruz, Deion Walker, and rising senior Carlos Journet.

Cowboys opened their half strong scoring on a 64-yard touchdown run by rising junior running back TJ Williams, TJ finished with 4 carries for 82 yards. Rising junior RB Alex Rodriguez added 47 rush yards on 7 carries and had a 42-yard kickoff return. Rising senior Cope Hargrove had over 90 all-purpose yards mainly through kick returns but also had two rushes.

Defensively, rising senior DT/OT Shane McGough had two tackle-for-losses.
