Fall Camp: Lakewood

There was a time period when Lakewood was arguably one of the most dangerous teams in the area. From 2012 to 2014, The Spartans won 29 games and dropped just 10 contests. In that same span Lakewood earned three straight district titles and one regional championship. Those days diminished in the current football cycle. But just as any cycle, success always comes back around.

Head football coach Cory Moore is entering his 10th season as the man in charge at Lakewood. He has experienced nothing but success while wearing the yellow and black. His teams have never suffered a sub .500 season and four of his previous nine seasons the Spartans won nine or more games. However, the last few years the boys managed to muster up just 11 wins. Not the standard the public is accustomed to.

So fast forward to 2017 and the team responsible to bring back the flash, excitement, big wins Lakewood is use to seeing. Sophomore Gregory Spann II takes over full time at Quarterback. The 6 foot 3 inch passer has a huge arm at his young age. Watching him up close, he is going to be a pretty prospect his senior season. Lots of room to get big. Very coachable, respectful and has a super attitude towards his teammates and coaches. Armani Adams will be playing both sides of the ball but could eventually become the main target for Gregory as well as making plays in the secondary.

Promising sophomore DE Trevon Riggins has transferred to IMG leaving the defense in the hands of DE Mataeo Brinson and OLB Rolando Sims. Brinson is a veteran player with lots of experience. Ability to get after the passer and track down running backs. Sims is the heartbeat of the defense, maybe even the team. Fast, physical and an emotional ball of energy…in addition to a fantastic football players. ATH Ky’Andre Moore and DT Jamal Lyles will be fixtures in the defense also counted on to disrupt the opposing offenses. ATH Louis Cotto transfers in from Dixie Hollins. Will play middle line backer and will also see plenty of time at running back providing a thunderous ball carrier for the Spartans.

Look forward to Lakewood stringing together a good season especially if they survive the gauntlet of the first half of their schedule.
