Andre Washington Jr. Gets a Passing Grade

Andre Washington, SteinbrennerAndre Washington is a two time ALL BCP post season selection. Highly productive for Steinbrenner and looking to take his game to the next level. The junior defensive linemen is not a popular name around town. Maybe his name should be though. Below is a brief film breakdown of Washington Jr.

Pursuit A+

High motor defensive lineman. The play is never too far to be made. Washington has excellent backside speed and never gives up on a play. It is evident that he has the stamina and mindset to play every snap to the whistle. Just relentless from the backside.

Footwork B+

Really good footwork especially when offensive linemen are attempting to cut block him in the box. Plays well with his hands and gets his feet off the ground and moving in a hurry. Several times I observed Washington feeling the cut block coming, keeping his eyes on his key, warding off the block and tracking down the play.

Run Stop Ability B+

Technique sound is the best way to describe Andre. He does a fantastic job beating his man or controlling his gap. I really like how he is able to retract, keeping gap control and then attempting to make the tackle in the backfield. To him, the play is not made unless he makes it. Washington goes above and beyond doing his job of controlling his assigned gap. He plays the majority of his snaps at defensive end. Does a great job keeping his outside free and shoulders square when reading run.

Pass Rush C

Washington is improving his pass rush moves. During our Ignite Showcase in January, Washington showed a good speed rush and started to use a decent slap and rip move. On his 2014 season film, his best pass rush move was clearly a speed/Bull rush using his quickness to unbalance the blocker and then a bull rush to overpower him. Washington will need to pocket two more quality moves to be more effective as a pass rusher.
