Breaking down Hillsborough-Largo

Breaking down Hillsborough-Largo
by Chris Girandola

Jarvis Stewart, Largo, RB

This past Tuesday, Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski celebrated his 903rd win to become the all-time Division I men’s leader for wins.

On Friday, the Hillsborough-Largo football game will feature legends in their own right as Terriers coach Earl Garcia and Packers coach Rick Rodriguez square off in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs. The two have combined for 306 career wins, 27 playoff appearances and three trips to the state final four.

Not only are these two veterans long-time legends of the game, they’re very aware of what to expect come Friday as the two teams will face each other for the third consecutive time in the postseason.

“This will be a great football game, just like the other ones have been,” Rodriguez said. “They’re led by a great coach, one of the best and they play a hard-core brand of football. We just have to be ready for it. It will be a battle.”

The two teams split their postseason affairs as Hillsborough avenged a 24-3 loss in 2009 with a 41-14 romp on the road in 2010.

This may set up for a tighter contest as both teams enter with an 8-2 record. The numbers are even more telling with Largo having scored 31 more points on the season than Hillsborough and having given up 21 less points this year.

Hillsborough did face Armwood and Plant, though. More to come on that tidbit of information.

“They’re very similar to us,” Garcia said. “They’re an extremely talented group and we’re going to have to do everything right to beat them.”

A major difference for Largo, though, will be having the services of its quarterback.

Last season, the Packers had to get quirky midway through the year when Juwan Brown suffered a season-ending injury. Using a single-wing offense, Largo could only muster 133 yards on the ground with Jarvis Stewart accounting for 94 of them.

Brown is fine and has showcased his skill set this year with six games of 90-plus passing yards and four games of 35-plus rushing yards. He’s accounted for eight touchdowns, four on the ground, three in the air and one as a receiver.

Unfortunately for the Packers, though, Stewart will be absent due to a hip injury suffered Oct. 6 against Dixie Hollins. The sophomore running back tried to make a return in the Lakewood Ranch game on Oct. 28, but he reinjured the hip while testing it out in pregame.

Packers junior linebacker Harry Brown, who had carried the ball out of the backfield just 10 times before starting against Boca Ciega, has filled in admirably with two games of 99 yards or more, including a 140-yard performance against Lakewood Ranch. Better yet, the 5-foot-11, 205-pound Brown is averaging over 10 yards a carry.

Derrick Doss, who is known more for his brilliance on defense and special teams, has added flash to the backfield as well. Doss, who has 65 tackles on the defensive side as a linebacker, has accounted for five of Largo’s seven special teams touchdowns and he’s used that explosiveness coming out of the backfield with six of his seven rushing touchdowns coming over the past five games.

The Packers will have to contend with Hillsborough two-way standout Anthony Brown, who enters the game with 845 rushing yards, 194 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns.

Brown, who chose Purdue over 11 other schools this summer, has also been instrumental on defense in helping the Terriers post three shutouts this year.

The Terriers are battle-tested, having held their own against the top two teams in the Tampa Bay region and two of the best teams in the nation, Armwood and Plant.

In the 38-16 loss to Armwood, Hillsborough erased a 24-point deficit with 16 consecutive fourth-quarter points before succumbing a pair of interceptions that were turned into touchdowns that ended the threat.

The Terriers, though, had lost the services of starting quarterback Jeremy Agrinzonis midway through the game and can be comforted knowing what they can do at full strength.

Agrinzonis, who has 997 passing yards and 10 touchdowns this year, has five games with 100-plus yards and has completed over 55 percent of his passes in those games.

Largo Packers Shutout Pinellas Park Patriots

The Largo Packers (1-1) defeated the Pinellas Park Patriots (1-1) in impressive fashion, scoring on their second drive of the game. The Packers never looked back, and rolled to a 26-0 victory.

The Packers opened the game calling back-to-back pass plays. Quarterback Juwan Brown connected with tight-end Chris Skukalek for a 30 yard gain to immediately set the tempo.Following a bad snap the Packers lost yardage and the drive ended with a 40 yard punt.

Largo quickly forced a turnover on the ensuing Pinellas Park drive. Derek Webb stripped Jeremi Powell on his first (and only) carry of the game and sophomore  Cordell Hudson recovered it to set up Largo at the Patriots’ 33 yard line.

Powell would remain in the game for the next defensive series where he and Tyree Graves converged on a tackle for a loss. Powell would come up lame and never be a factor in the game again. He was walking up and down the sideline, periodically stretching, but it was clear he didn’t feel good.

“I think it was a hip flexor issue, but I’m not sure,” Head Coach Ken Crawford said.”We’ll see. We’ll get him evaluated quick.”

Powell’s presence was missed on the defensive side of the ball as the Packers compiled nearly 300 yards of offense.

Highly touted sophomore runningback Jarvis Stewart had another stellar game rushing for 125 yards and 3 touchdowns. He had heard all about Powell and Graves. He knows Powell is committed to the University of Florida, but none of that phased him.

“I’ve been hearing a lot about them coming into this game,” Stewart said, “but I wasn’t going to let them get into my head.”

Stewart in fact says that he has plenty of offers of his own.

“I got a lot of offers,” he said. “I got offers from North Carolina, Alabama, Texas, Miami, Florida, all of them.”

Another thing that makes Stewart’s performance so impressive is that it comes on the heals of a 25 carry, 165 yard performance in a loss to Southeast last week.

The Largo runningback had many impressive carries, but one sticks out more than any other. A 28 yard run along the sideline where he broke four tackles and was somehow able to keep his balance.

“I didn’t even think I was going to strike like that, like I did,” he explained. “When I got on the sideline I knew it was mine. I got facemasked and shook that off. I was going to cut back in, but then I just decided to stiff arm that guy.”

Largo Head Coach Rick Rodriguez expects these kinds of performances all season from Stewart.

“I think he is one of the best backs in the state,” he said. “He runs physical. He plays the game of football with passion.”

Cordell Hudson (a sophomore) was tasked with guarding the explosive WR/LB Iman Davis. He responded as well as anyone could have hoped. Davis was held in check. He recorded only two catches for 57 yards. Hudson fought off a downfield block and recovered a fumble. He intercepted a pass and returned it 50 yards into Largo territory.

“He had a great game, and he’s only a sophomore,” Largo coach Rodriguez said.

Other observations:

Largo:

Senior Derek Webb: His number was by far the most seen on the Largo defense. He is undersized at 5-9 172 lbs, but he  clearly has a nose for the ball. Webb was involved in over 10 tackles and you can just tell the middle linebacker has a  fire. He may not be a DI prospect based on his size, but he is definitely fun to watch.

Sophomore Francisco Hernandez: If he isn’t on your 2014 watch list, add him. 6-0 180 lbs, and a rock coming from the outside lineback spot, he made ball carries pay. I counted two series where Hernandez made three-four consecutive solo tackles. He is very sure in space and has the strength to really make guys think about coming back to his area.

Junior Derrick Doss: Unfortunately for him he is playing behind Jarvis Stewart who is an absolute animal. Doss did however make use of his carries. He ran 5 times for 43 yards and scored a touchdown late in the fourth. He’s got decent speed and is listed at 5-9 190 lbs, but its doubtful he sees enough carries to really make a huge impact.

Senior Devin Porter: A 6-2 185 lb DE is extremely quick off the ball. he has length and uses his hands well. He recorded four sacks against Hames (matching his 2010 total) and I would expect him to receive atleast a few offers around midseason.

Pinellas Park:

We all know Jeremi Powell, Iman Davis, and Tyree Graves. Two runningbacks you may not have heard as much about though are Garrett Nevitt and Marquis Samuel. Nevitt was the workhouse rushing 16 times for 64 yards, 48 of those yards coming in the first half.

In the second half Samuel was used as a virtual scat back. He is smaller than Nevitt, and quicker.

Largo will host Countryside next week and Pinellas Park will host Dixie Hollins.

Exciting Pinellas County Running Backs

Jarvis Stewart, Largo, RB

The running back position is one of the more glamorous positions on the field, as it is often integral in both the passing and running attack. A well-rounded halfback is commonly viewed as a big part of a team’s success. The RB is responsible for carrying the rock on the majority of running plays, and often used as a receiver on passing plays. In today’s game, an effective back must have a blend of both quickness and agility as a runner, as well as sure hands and shrewd vision up field as a receiver.

I have listed 6 of the best running backs in Pinellas County that excite me. Not necessarily, who is the better player, but who excites me as a player and what he is able to do on the field.

1 Diomi Roberts, Countryside, 2012
Roberts has flash and spunk. His ability to make plays is unmatched by any running back in Pinellas County. He is small, but with excellent feet and awesome straight ahead speed. Roberts possesses excellent lateral movement, able to side step defenders, plant and accelerate and make an east or west play, quickly go north. Plenty of times Roberts took away the angle of the pursuing tacklers, put a move on one tackler and taking it to the house. Roberts has the ability to turn any play into a home run. You tend to hold your breath each time he touches the ball, because after about 5 seconds, 6 more points can be added to Countryside’s score due to Roberts’s efforts.

2 Brent O’Neal, Canterbury, 2012
If you have never heard the name, you may have been living under a rock for the last 3 years or live in Hillsborough County (j/k haha). O’Neal surprises you with a scary combination of speed and power. Not once have I seen this young man shy away from a big hit, step out of bounds to save his body or go down on the first hit. This kid is solid, powerful and fun to watch. O’Neil is a tremendous inside/outside runner which makes him just that much more of a threat to the defense and an asset to the offense. He has sweeeet feet and lowers his pads in the hole. He runs with a low center of gravity and excellent pad level.

3 Ryan Green, St. Pete Catholic, 2013
Green is a strong runner who is more agile than you would expect. He can run between the tackles, where he is best. Punishing defenders and taking names later. Or, he can get to the corner of the defense and make your secondary look foolish. Many Pinellas football fan regard Green as the best running back in the county because of what he is able to do. He has magnificent vision, runs with a low pad level and smells the end zone.

4 Denzal Dillard, Boca Ciega, 2013
You can’t mention top running backs in Pinellas without having Denzal Dillard come out your mouth. Simply put, the kid can go. Dillard gives Boca a legit homerun hitter each time he touches the ball. Whether he gets the ball handed to him or receives the ball on a screen play, Dillard will make defenses come to a standstill. His vision is good and his feet are better. He also has really good balance and rarely goes down to the first tackler.

5 Jarvis Stewart, Largo, 2014
Stewart is the youngest of the six backs on this list, but you can see the potential jumping off the screen. Stewart is a strong runner that has a huge burst to explode away from the defense. He has plenty of room to grow, but as a youngster he is a very talented runner that has some things you can’t coach; balance and vision. Both are key to being a big time back. Stewart never stops churning his legs. Always pumping his knees attempting to get out of any tackle.

6 Emmanuel Stewart, Gibbs, 2013
Emmanuel Stewart may fall at the bottom of this list, but not to say he is not a good player. Stewart’s best assets are his vision and quick burst. Stewart can anticipate defenders moves and runs very smart; wraps up the ball when needed, switches hands outside of traffic, puts his head down at the right time and runs hard. His burst allows him to quickly get out of trouble and accelerate to the next level of the defense. Because Stewart is a small back, he is already low to the ground which makes it harder for the defense to find him and gives him better balance and agility.

-I like Kenny Blanch, Palm Harbor also. Just have not seen enough of him. Watch this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pyKtjGIrLo
