ESS Observations
Lake Gibson High School welcomed upwards of 200 prep football athletes to compete in the 2012 Elite Scouting Services Combine. A number of Tampa Bay prospects were in attendance including quarterbacks, runningbacks, tight ends, offensive linemen, defensive linemen and defensive backs.
Quarterbacks:
The Bay Area brought the crop of the QB class with Christian Strong, Countryside ’13, had arguably the best showing of all QBs present. He is a extremely under the radar because of his recent move to Tampa Bay from Canada. Strong featured a powerful arm, solid footwork and keen accuracy. He has big shoes to fill stepping in behind Gray Crow, but he appears to be up for the task.
Other top QB performances:
Brad Mayes, Berkeley Prep ’15 – Mayes is a young prospect with a very high ceiling. At 6-2 the freshman has a nice base to built on. He has a lively arm and the ability to place the ball wherever he wants, especially over the top.
Landon Galloway, Plant City ’14 – Galloway was a pleasant surprise. The prototypical slot receiver appears to be in line to be the Raiders starter and is ready to do so. He has solid feet, plus arm strength and could grow into a formidable signal caller.
Runningbacks:
Emmanuel Stewart, Gibbs ’13, and Ja’ Juan Pollock, Manatee ’13, stole the show. Stewart competed with a brace on his knee, but if you only watched him from the waist up, you would have never noticed. The stocky back boasted 21 bench press reps at 185 lbs and was shifty throughout the combine.
Pollock is a speedster and showcased it today. He clocked a 4.41 forty yard dash an burned by linebackers/cornerbacks during 1-on-1 drills.
Trench Warfare:
Highlighted by defensive linemen Jordan Sherit, Hillsborough ’13, and Devyn Salmon, Plant City ’13, a number of Tampa Bay prospects had strong showings. Seth Crowell, Plant City ’13 OL, saw his stock rise the most. The offensive guard has good size and uses his hands well. He has good technique and quick feet.
Jarrett Gretebeck, Strawberry Crest ’13, also had a very impressive day coming off the edge. Although more fit to play LB Gretebeck is quick off the line and uses his go-to rip/swim to get around slower, bigger, offensive tackles.
ATH:
Maurice Hall, Gibbs ’14, has a problem; or a gift; or a bit of both. Noone knows where he is going to play – not even his head coach. While a number of people project him to grow into an outside linebacker he may be a better fit at strong safety, or corner, or even receiver. Today he spent most of his time on the offensive side of the ball carving DBs up. He runs crisp routes and has explosive quickness off the line.
Vincent Jackson, Jesuit ’14, spent most of his time at TE today, but saw limited snaps with the amount of receivers at the combine. Jackson continues to propel himself to the front of the 2014 class with his size, strength and skill.

Devyn Salmon offered by Wake Forest
Plant City defensive tackle Devyn Salmon was offered by Wake Forest today he confirmed in a text message. For Salmon Wake Forest is the first to offer and it comes after he attended the BHSN/BCP Ignite combine, among a few others.
“It feels great, truly a blessing,” he said in a text message of earning his first offer. “I give all my success and credit to PCHS Football and my mentor Gerold Dickens. I’m going to continue to work.”
Florida, Memphis, Florida International University, Iowa State, South Florida, Central Florida, Baylor and Western Kentucky are also showing interest in the 6-foot 2-inch, 280 pound prospect.
Salmon is rated as the No. 2 DT in Tampa Bay according to the 2012 BCP player rankings. He expects to be offered by a number of schools during the spring.

Devyn Salmon, best DT in the Bay?
Tampa Bay players flourish at local combine
An estimated 50 local rising juniors and seniors stole the show at a local combine that welcomed nearly 100 prospects on Saturday at Larry Sanders Sports Complex.
Best Overall performance; “Combine King” – Zach Benjamin, 2013 WR Tampa Catholic
Benjamin was virtually unstoppable, dominating each and every defensive back who tried to cover him during 1-on-1′s. He shined during individual combine testing as well turning in a 4.45 shuttle time and 4.65 forty yard dash. His 9-foot 10-inch broad jump was best at the combine by and astonishing nine inches.
Benjamin has great footwork and is learning how to use his size to his advantage. At 6-feet 5-inches, Benjamin says he hopes to put on 10 pounds before he graduates to tip the scales at 200 pounds.
Overall TE MVP – Jeremy Kerr, 2013 St. Petersburg
Since I did not see much of St. Petersburg last year I was blown away by Kerr. At 6-feet 6-inches Kerr is more than a big body, he is an athlete. Quick feet, soft hands and runs well. He may grow into an offensive tackle, but for now Kerr would be a dominating force at tight end if he was able to flourish in a more pass-heavy offense.
2013 WR MVP – Domenic James, Clearwater Central Catholic
Somewhat overshadowed by a dominating rushing attack in 2011, Domenic James is a good-looking prospect out of CCC. At 6-feet 190 pounds he has a nice frame and runs solid routes.
2013 DL MVP – Devyn Salmon, Plant City
Quick feet and violent hands are his two best tools. Being 6-feet 2-inches tall and 282 pounds doesn’t hurt either. Salmon’s stock is continuing to rise as he is beginning to garner national attention. He dominated 1-on-1 drills showing good quickness off the ball and the ability to shoot gaps.
2013 OL MVP - Robby Garcia, Jesuit
Garcia is an interesting player to watch. He’s listed as a defensive end and tight end for the Tigers, yet his frame is more fit to play guard at the next level. Interest surrounds Garcia, who is still waiting on his first offer, who coaches are looking at to convert to the offensive line.
Garcia held his own during 1-on-1′s and said after the combine that although he hasn’t played much on the offensive line that he knows the basic techniques and is a sponge soaking up information.
2014 OL MVP – Brad Smith, Gaither
Smith is a competitor. He has nice technique and wants to go against the best of the best. Smith has some growing to do, but as long as he continues to work hard in the weight room he could grow into a formidable prospect. He runs well and will probably succeed in Gaither’s new offense in 2012.
2013 QB MVP – Jake Shade, Clearwater Central Catholic
Shade stood out throwing some of the tightest spirals at the combine. He struggled a little bit throwing the deep ball, but has a quick release and good accuracy throwing the short comebacks and slants.
Other noteable performances:
Alex McGough, Gaither, QB, 2014
Harry Brown, Largo, LB/RB, 2013
Riley Barr, St. Petersburg, LB, 2014
Canaan Brown, Clearwater Central Catholic, LB, 2014
Cedrick King, Plant City, DE, 2014
Jameel Garrett, Durant, DB, 2013
