OBSERVATIONS
New, revived attitude. Lots of energy and organized program. Discipline and accountability are key as punctuality and an emphasis on the details were evident.
BLOW UP
Rising Junior Taylor King has the opportunity to be the biggest surprise at QB this season. Last season he split time at QB with departing senior Jon Economou and is cemented in to carry the Patriots to new life. Currently he is ranked as the #9 best pro style QB in our coverage area:
1 Pete Dinovo East Lake 2013
2 Chase Litton Wharton 2014
3 Tracy Johnson Lakewood 2013
4 Brandon Hawkins Alonso 2013
5 Alex McGough Gaither 2014
6 Cody Crouse Bloomingdale 2013
7 Zain Gilmore Blake 2013
8 Nate Mills Sickles 2013
9 Taylor King Freedom 2014
10 Darryl Richardson Armwood 2013
King stands an impressive 6 foot 2 inches and tops the scale at slightly under 200lbs. He has very polished mechanics for a young QB and throws an impressive tight spiral. In order for him to have a break out year, he will need a dependable run attack and some playmakers on the outside. That is where there could be a problem.
HOLE IN THE UNIT
As a team in 2011, the Patriots rushed 262 times for just 673 yards averaging 2.57 per carry and 61.2 yards per game. The leading rusher last season, Tyrell Nunn will be graduating in June; leaving the position wide open for the taking. Defensive Back, Nate Godwin was the team’s second leading rusher in 2011 (227 yards).
Right now, the run attack seems to need the most improvement and is in dire need of a playmaker. Anthony Hendry, 2015 (4×100 and 4×400 state qualifier) can be that guy. Great burst and overall speed, but will need to hit the weight room hard to carry the load at the varsity level. Could be a big year for this young man.
Zack Romp is the Wes Welker of the team. Versatile and sure handed. He will likely be the go to guy for King. The question arises…who else? Who else will be a perimeter threat for the Patriots? This is the other glaring question mark in the offense.
Overall, the defense will be tough and the offense has a chance to be good because of a big offensive line and experienced QB. Rising senior D1 prospects, LB Isaac Tanner and DB Nate Godwin return to command the defense. Tanner posted 75 total tackles last year and led the team in sacks with 7. Godwin is promising defensive back that can play any position in the secondary (43 total tackles and 1 INT in 2011).

Barons small in numbers, but optimistic
The Observation
Under 30 players were at practice today. Most team segments of practice were performed using a “Half Line” concept. The numbers were not large and the tempo was mild. It was evident that the focus of practice was “Baby steps”…learning. The coaches slowed down practices and harped on small details.
The Barons will be implementing a new offenses this season. One that will hopefully spring rising senior RB, Ryan Green and force teams to defend other threats. 2014 prospect, Reilly Gibbons seems to have made the permanent move to left offensive tackle and is expected to thrive.
The Outlook
After observing practice today and comparing the talent level, SPC will have a tough time in their district for the 2012 season. CCC and Tampa Catholic will be the early favorites with the Barons slugging it with Berkeley Prep for the #4 spot. Players and coaches alike are optimistic about the summer, anticipating a large group of incoming freshmen, a few that hopefully will make an immediate impact.
| 3A-5 2011 | DIST | ALL | PF | PA |
| Berkeley Prep C | 3-0 | 12-1 | 437 | 91 |
| Clearwater Central Catholic R | 2-1 | 8-3 | 263 | 106 |
| St. Petersburg Catholic | 0-3 | 2-8 | 249 | 394 |
| Tampa Catholic | 1-2 | 6-4 | 264 | 176 |
The Heavy Hitters
Ryan Green is “The Show”! Restricted today to non contact drills as a precaution for a nagging shoulder injury (not serious), Green looks the part. Because practice was mostly a walk through/teaching session, I never did get to see Green perform.
Reilly Gibbons has come on strong lately as a young promising prospect. He currently holds offers from Purdue, Nebraska, Rutgers and Tennessee. Gibbons started at TE last season, but has made the move to left offensive tackle. A few things stick out which make me believe that Gibbins could be a real good tackle. First, he has long arms which will help with keeping rushers at bay. Second, he bends really well. Good flexibility translates into good technique. Last, he moves well laterally allowing him to be a good reach blocker. I did not see him kick step, pass protect or punch. A lot is left to be seen as Gibbons learns and becomes more comfortable at his new position.
The Future
Joe Uhatae, 2014, LB; Elevisi Halapio, 2014, LB and Chris White, 2014 S all looked well in pads today. Both LBs showed physicality while White shows plenty of athleticism. However, the most impressive young prospect was freshman RB, Jaquan Fuller. At 5-8/160lbs this kid is pretty electric. The young back has a great burst, excellent feet and fascinating balance. If Fuller pans out to be a legit threat, Ryan Green will have Christmas come early. Fuller will take a lot of weight of the shoulders of Green, intern could allow Green to run wild his senior year.

Pasco: Ivie blows up, Pirates add gas
Somehow the Pasco Pirates have to followup a memorable 2011 season. A season where Head Football Coach Tom McHugh led his youthful Pirates to a 13-1 season, losing in the semi finals of the state playoffs.
Senior QB, Jacob Guy left his mark on the program. Putting up big numbers and producing arguably one of the greatest senior seasons in Pasco County history. Trey Dudley-Giles was a running Hilite film. The combination of Guy to Dudley-Giles was a fixture on Friday nights in Dade City.
Those two and other seniors will move on and hand down the responsibilities of leadership, hardwork and accountability to the next group. One of the successors is none other than 2013 DT Joey Ivie.
Ivie is the #1 ranked DT and #17 ranked payer overall in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco County. The 6-4/268lbs monster of a player is agile, quick and strong. His recruitment has spiraled out of control over the last month picking up verbal overs from programs such as Tennessee, Rutgers, Vanderbilt, Florida, Florida St. and Mississippi State. He currently holds 18 total verbal offers with plenty more insight.
Joey Ivie HILITES – We sat down with Ivie and talked some recruiting:
How has the success of the Pasco Pirates helped with your recruiting exposure?
Ivie: Yes, because we are still some what underrated because Pasco is in a small town. But, advancing far in the playoffs last year helped and opened some eyes.
Has attending camps and showcases elevated your exposure?
Ivie: I have only attended one showcase, But riding on the Unsigned Preps bus tour as a sophomore, attending different camps, help a lot.
What is the most confusing part of the recruiting process?
Ivie: Currently I have 18 offers. The most confusing part will be choosing the right fit.
What schools have expressed the most NEED for you?
Ivie: Many of the small schools along with Miami, USF and Texas Tech.
Do you think you will be an early commit or string your decision out to signing day?
Ivie: I will probably commit before signing day.
Will the NCAA football conference realignments effect your commitment decision?
Ivie: It could impact my decision in a good way.
What have you not accomplished that you are chasing?
Ivie: I don’t know what the sack record is, but I would like the sack record for Pasco High and Pasco County.
Didn’t Know about, but looked good:
Ronald Scaife, 2014 OL/DL
James McClinton, 2013 RB
Plant sophomore offered by Florida
It didn’t take long for schools to take notice of 2014 Plant WR Austin Roberts. He received his first offer on April 23. Less than a month later Roberts has pulled in five offers.
His latest: the University of Florida, is arguably his biggest offer to date.
“I feel extremely blessed that one of the best schools in the SEC thinks I can play with them,” Roberts said of his offer from the Gators. “I like what I’m hearing from coach Lewis about how they incorporate their tight end into the offense.”
Currently a 6-foot 2-inch 195-pound WR, Roberts will likely grow into a tight end, which is what his father, Alfredo Roberts, played at the University of Miami and in the NFL for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Dallas Cowboys.
With his father, his family roots run deep at the University of Miami. But, he also has ties to Florida.
“My cousin was almost a a high school valedictorian chose Florida over a ton of schools,” Roberts said. “When I told her [I was offered by Florida] she just started screaming in the middle of the night. Shes been bugging me about Florida saying ‘you need to be good enough for Florida to offer you’ so shes excited.”
Academics are extremely important to Roberts. He has received a lot of early attention from Ivy League schools like Stanford and says he needs to learn more about the academics in Gainesville before he can make a full assessment of the school.
“[Academics] will be a major factor in my college decision.”
–
Roberts got his first offer in late April from Iowa.
“It feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders,” Roberts said when he picked up his first offer. “I’m literally holding back tears of joy.”
Indiana and in-state power Miami followed just days later before Purdue and Florida extended him verbal offers.
–
A key factor in Plant’s 8A state championship Roberts will be enrolling at Carmel (Ind.) High School. His father accepted a coaching job with the Indianapolis Colts – he was previously with the Tampa Bay Bucs.
Roberts leaves June 9, but says that his relocation won’t factor in his decision whether or not he returns to the Sunshine State for college.
“It won’t be bad,” he said of the possibility of attending college in the state of Florida. “I’ll still have all my family and friends in Florida, plus all my dad’s family still lives in Miami.”
